Reasons for Winning the Award: Innovative Design
The 25th Korea Semiconductor Design Contest was held to foster the design capabilities of undergraduate and graduate students in the semiconductor design field, discover creative ideas, and strengthen the basic competitiveness of the semiconductor industry. A total of 20 works were awarded at this year's awards ceremony, with 4 of them going to student teams.
A team of students from the Department of System Semiconductor Engineering, who won the SK Hynix award, presented an innovative work titled "Extended Kalman Filter for Battery SoC Estimation Based on Sampling Techniques." Unlike the existing software-based processing to prevent fires caused by overcharging of electric vehicle batteries, they implemented hardware-based processing. In addition, they implemented a hardware optimization process to enable real-time estimation and reduce power consumption. This was highly evaluated as an innovative idea.
Seungjae Yoon, a student in the Department of Semiconductor System Engineering at Sangmyung University who won the award this time, said, "There were many difficulties in the hardware optimization process, but I was able to complete it through research and discussion with my team members and professors." Sunhee Kim, a professor in the Department of Semiconductor System Engineering at Sangmyung University, who supervised the winning team, said, "I applaud the competence and passion of the four students who worked diligently for a long time, researching and applying various methods to design a complete work. I will cheer for them to grow into good engineers."

Convergence University Business Unit hosted by the Intelligent Robot Innovation Convergence University Business Unit, was sponsored by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy and the Korea Robot Industry Promotion Institute. This is the largest robot event in Korea, held on an international scale, integrating exhibitions, competitions, and academic conferences. It was held in 14 competitions and 44 categories, with 1,068 teams and over 2,360 participants. Sunwoo Kim, a third-year student in the Department of Human Intelligence Robotics at Sangmyung University, who won the Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy Award, said, "The detailed guidance of my advisor and the support of the Sangmyung University Intelligent Robot Innovation Convergence University Business Unit were a great help in preparing for this competition. I will devote myself more to the development of intelligent robots in the future." Tae-gu Kang (Department of Human Intelligence Robotics), the director of the Sangmyung University Intelligent Robot Innovation Convergence University Business Unit, said, "The Sangmyung University Intelligent Robot Innovation Convergence University Business Unit is building a good educational environment with practical robot education and support for the latest robot technology. We plan to further activate participation in competitions so that practical abilities can be strengthened through various experiences in the field of intelligent robots."
This award ceremony is a testament to the promising future of Korea's semiconductor design field. The winners' innovative ideas and relentless efforts will significantly contribute to enhancing our nation's competitiveness in the semiconductor industry. The synergy created by the systematic support of educational institutions, like Sangmyung University, and the collaboration with the industry is particularly noteworthy. We anticipate that the talents cultivated through this competition will become the driving force behind Korea's rise as a global semiconductor powerhouse. We look forward to your continued support for their growth.
