by Sumin Lee, Reporter
"Do you know about university volunteer clubs?" Most universities in Korea have one or several volunteer clubs. Korea National Aeronautics University, located near the school, has a volunteer club called "ptpi" and is engaged in volunteer activities, plogging, which refers to the act of picking up trash while jogging by combining the two words plocka upp and jogging, and joint volunteer activities in connection with Good Neighbors. In addition, Kyung Hee University has a volunteer club called "Goeundae. They visit child welfare facilities to conduct volunteer activities. For instance, they actively engaged in activities such as holding a sports day or preparing various indoor activities such as hide and seek, dodgeball and soccer for children from a child care facility. In addition, Seoul National University and Ewha Womans University create a joint volunteer club called "Seed" and engage in activities such as art education service activities for the purpose of contributing to society through art. Like this school, our school also has the Sangmyung Social Service Group, an in-school volunteer club. In this article, I would like to introduce about volunteer groups, activities, and how to join them.
Introducing Our Community Volunteering Club
The representative volunteer group of our school is the “Sangmyung Community Volunteer Group”.Anyone who is attending our school can apply for the volunteer group regardless of nationality. It is not difficult to join the “Sangmyung Community Volunteer Group”. If you look at the order of joining the volunteer group , first of all, if you go to the Sammul portal, our school's general portal site, and go into the order of application for academic, community service, volunteer work, volunteer work applying. You can participate in volunteer work on a first-come, first-served basis by checking the date and time of application in the notice on the school website. Participating in volunteer work at our school can satisfy the maximum number of activities and the hours of volunteer work on campus are recognized differently depending on the activities. When applying, it is also necessary to carefully examine the qualifications for application and the number of people to be recruited to check the availability of application. At this time, it is important to note that volunteer activities are not applied for a fixed period of time, and there is a system that does not notify you separately, so if you want to participate in volunteer activities, you should always access the school website to check the notice periodically. In addition to the volunteer group, there are also social service courses in our school that allow students to fill their credits at the same time as they do community service. If you take this class, you must autonomously fill 24 hours of volunteer work, and one credit is recognized when you fill it. However, as it is a regular course, you need to pay attention to the fact that you can get a nonpass if you do not meet the class conditions. In addition, Cheonan Campus is running a program called "Blue Campus, Higher," which means that Sangmyung people, who will rise to the highest point and extend the farthest, strives for a better environment from nearby campuses to communities for the local environment, and integrates the SSIC-organized environmental service program. It proposes various activities such as environmental beautification in Anseo-dong, near Cheonan Campus, and can be applied on the school website.
Details of Volunteering Activities
To mention some of the recent activities of the Sangmyung Community Volunteer Group, activities such as volunteer work at the Sadang Senior Welfare Center's Path Restaurant Support, exchange program for university students for the underprivileged in the region, preparation program for self-reliance for young people with visual overlapping disabilities, volunteer work for preparing kimjang, and community path service are being actively carried out .In addition to joining and participating in our school's volunteer group, UNICEF Children's Rights Supporters U-champ can participate in volunteer activities. And if you participate in the KOICA Project Volunteer Group, you can volunteer to help various countries around the world. Furthermore, participating in mentoring, a community children's center learning support volunteer conducted by the Korea Labor Welfare Corporation, to practice volunteer activities and get scholarships chances. Activities other than school volunteer groups also have a fixed application period, and you can only participate in certain volunteer activities if interviews are conducted or certain conditions are met, so it is necessary to carefully check information before applying.
The good thing about volunteering while studying in college is that you can interact with a variety of people and gain various experiences. In addition, when you get a job at a company that values service or engages in related businesses, your volunteer work record can be evaluated positively. However, isn't it really the true meaning of service that you can do as an adult, think about the meaning of true service with a sense of responsibility, organize, and cultivate yourself, rather than the volunteer work that is written in the student record book of middle and high school?
