The Job & Career Department at Sangmyung University is always trying to help students find their own paths. To find out more about his work and how they can help out students, The SM Herald sat down with Mr. Moon via e-mail on September 7. Would you introduce yourself first? I have worked in the HR/HRD(Human Resource Development) Department, recruiting and educating employees for 28 years. I have been helping students at universities for 8 years in total. Here, Sangmyung University is like my sweet home because I have been here for six years. I majored in Industrial Engineering, and started my first career in HR department at a mid-sized group company. There, I loved meeting people and supporting them. Of course, I am still having lots of fun with my job. That is why I plan to do something meaningful to others for the rest of my life. How did you come up with the idea of sending text messages to students? I started text messaging when I first got here. At the time, I was finding the best way to communicate with students, from freshmen to graduates. Kakaotalk was hard to keep up with countless numbersof students. Thus, I decided to send text messages instead of it. Sometimes I get replies at midnight, or on weekends. Some other times, I get harsh words too. However, after I realized that texting a message is the only way to keep in touch with the students, I became comfortable and passionate about it. What does the Job & Career Department do for the students? We help students to set their career goals and advise them on how to prepare for a job. If one wants to set his/her career goal, we have to let him/her know about job duties. We also need to let them meet graduates who are working at many kinds of companies. If one wants to apply for a job, we help him/her through various programs and consulting such as cover letter correction and pre-interview. For now, we try to focus on making programs that meet the students’ needs. What can you proudly say about the Department? We send text messages until students are “literally” tired of them, believing that they should know about our support. We try hard to let students realize that they can get what they need and where to get some help. Whether our students are interested in it or not, I can confidently say that Sangmyung University is the only one that its students recognize the name, Job & Career Department. How does the Department deal with the global pandemic? We have decided to put our student’s safety first. Consulting will still be available face-to-face, one student at a time. The numbers of participants for our programs will be minimized (less than 11), or one on one if a student wants to. Also, we provide live, online special lectures where the students can ask questions and share their thoughts. Are there any specific programs you are planning for the future? The finest feature of our programs is that it is students who decide what we will do next. We just let them be informed about a program’s intention and basic outlines. Right now, we try to focus on programs where students can keep in touch with employed graduates, setting realistic career goals and getting some advice. Also we will gradually increase the number of programs that our students request. Can foreign/exchange students also get some help? We have not made a foreigner-focused program yet. However, our ongoing programs are also open to foreign or exchange students. Plus, with this interview as a momentum, we will try harder to promote our programs to them. Do you have something in mind to say for the students? Not too long ago, there was an online job fair under the slogan of “where is no, what is yes.” Yes, you read it right. It is what you do that matters the most, not which company you work at. I really want to tell this to every student out there. You should ask yourself what kind of work you want to do, and which occupation you like the most. Just setting a specific company or a civil servant as your ultimate goal is not desirable. I can guarantee that chasing the company’s reputation and salary is not a good idea if you are finding something you can continue to do even after 60. Therefore, I want you to actively take part in our main programs that show you how the graduates got their jobs and what they actually do. In conclusion, “Finding a job or occupation you really love as fast as possible” is the key point. Even if you are a senior, you need to keep reminding yourself.

Kicker: SM NEWS The New Server, Sammeul By Yeong-Jin Choi, Cub-Reporter pch39067@gmail.com Did you know the fact that Sangmyung University had relocated the ‘United Log-In site’ into the Sammeul portal? Sammeul portal is crucial to many students. Students can find out what kind of courses they have finished, and what subjects they must complete before graduation. Sammeul portal can also help students to take time-off school easily without visiting school, or even help them to drop out. However, after the relocation of the server, many students are crying out loud that Sammeul’s server is way too fragile. Therefore, I am going to find out more deeply of how students exactly feel about the Sammeul and conclude with the idea of how to make students use Sammeul more often. I have had a survey for students to know how exactly they felt about Sammeul last semester. When I asked, ‘Do you think that Sammeul portal is useful and convenient in your daily life?’ the percentage they answered ‘Yes’ was slightly higher than the rate of ‘No’. However, when I asked, ‘Do you think Sammeul portal’s stability has been improved compared to the United Long-In site?’ more than half of the students disagreed. They have answered that the two biggest problems of Sammeul is that the server is very unstable and slow. They also have strongly stated that the server has been down when they tried to sign up for the next semester, and the E-Campus took too much time to load. According to these answers, we can find out that many students are having difficulties with using Sammeul. In my perspective, I think that one of the reasons why students are having difficulties handling Sammeul well is because of the low accessibility. Compared to the United Log-In site, we cannot directly access to Sammeul when we search for ‘Sammeul portal’ at the website. If we do not have to visit the Sangmyung homepage just to use the Sammeul portal, I think it would be more convenient for the students to use it more often. Sangmyung University has been working hard for training professional personnel. Furthermore, high-tech industry-oriented education was introduced to realize the vision of an “innovative talent-building college leading the future society.” ▲Robots Made by a New Department The new high-tech department will recruit 32 students majoring in AR and VR media design at the Design College and 42 students majoring in Green Smart City at the Convergence Technology College. AR and VR media design majors will recruit 10 students for the student record curriculum, 4 students for the student record comprehensive screening, and 1 person for the student record general regular rotation. The Department of Green Smart City will recruit 18 students for the student record curriculum, eight students for the top-name talent screening for the student record, and three students for the regular rotation of the student record. Recently, AR·VR basic industry has entered the used actively stage in various fields of industry because that industry was reorganized and extended to a design-oriented contents industry. Kicker: SM NEWS Mask Donation Relay from Chinese Students at Sangmyung University by Min-gyeong Lee, Editor lee.mkpeach@gmail.com Chinese international students attending Sangmyung University donated masks to the school (from the third on the left, a student Im Dan, Prof. Park Min-Jung, and the Graduate School President Kim Jung-Wook) On April 8th, a box arrived at the graduate school office of Sangmyung University. There were 2,000 masks in the box. The person who sent the masks is Sun Yu, a Chinese international student who is enrolled in a doctoral course in the Department of Formative Arts. Inside the box, there was a note that said, "I would like to help the faculty and students who are are struggling with Corona 19 a little, and I hope we can overcome this together." In March, 900 masks were delivered from Chinese students such as Ren Dan, Li Liang, Du Xiaolei, Di Aoran, and Zhu Weijia, who are undergoing doctoral studies. They said, "We are sending these with the intention of being a small help when we are all struggling with the Corona 19." Masks received from international students will be distributed to students. “I am very grateful to their minds thinking about our school even though the situation in China would not be good,” said Dr. Kim Jung-wook, graduate school president, who received the masks. Park Min-jung, a professor at the Department of Formative Arts, expressed her gratitude by saying, “We will use it for students in small-scale, face-to-face classes to be held after students' consent and safety measures.” On the other hand, Sangmyung University quickly checks the mask sales network for international students who have difficulty buying masks in Korea, purchases the masks and distributes them to students. Kicker: SM NEWS Satisfaction Survey of Students about School By Dong-Wook Kim, Reporter smartpodo@kakao.com Due to COVID-19, most of the lectures are currently held non-face to face. Therefore, most of the students have not seen or have not visited school yet. The online lectures made students to be curious about whether the school is dealing well with the disease. Here are some surveys taken by Sangmyung Univ. students based on their school’s response to COVID-19 and their countermeasures. It is important to be aware about the students’ opinion to make a right choice to run the school. By knowing the thought of a majority of students, it is easy for the school to make an ideal decision that students and the school are ok with. This is a satisfactory survey result about Sangmyung University’s countermeasures to COVID-19. It seems that most of the students are not quite satisfied with the school’s counter measures. 47 students out of 78 participants have selected that the school is not dealing with the disease. One of the main solutions that the school came out with was to do face to face lectures if there are ten or less students in a lecture with an unanimous opinion on doing face to face lectures. Here is the satisfactory rate survey result of Sangmyung University’s main solution to COVID-19. The pandemic is getting worse than expected, maybe until the second semester. What are students’ thoughts on doing the face to face lectures during the second semester? The graph shows that approximately 62 percent of students disagree with having face to face lectures next semester. There are some reasons that the surveyors wrote about why they agree or disagree with online lectures. Most of the students that agree with online lectures wrote that COVID-19 will still be a pandemic then. They wrote that it will be easy to get a group infection if offline lectures are done at the latter semester. On the other hand, most of the reason that they disagree with the online lectures is they cannot follow the quality of offline lectures. Online lectures have a limitation to reach the quality of offline lectures. Overall, the survey shows that the school has a lack of gathering opinions from students when processing protocols during the disease. There is a controversial conversation about agreeing or disagreeing with the offline lectures. However, a lot of people are not aware of this new online consulting program. Here are how these employment course programs have changed. Students can see the specific information of the employment course support program at the Sangmyung Univ. webpage. For the consulting program specifically, you can simply visit https://job.smuc.ac.kr:453/to apply. The consulting program for the first semester is until the 30th of June, so you should be in a hurry if you need consulting ASAP. The consulting with the expert can be done remotely or by visiting the campus in Seoul. The procedure of the consulting consists of two steps. First, your major’s consulting expert will be collecting an application from you. This way the consulting can be based on your major or your interest, which can lead to an ideal solution. The second consulting can be done with an unbiased expert. In particular, the research is so very meaningful that it is a study that our school can be proud of and can have a good impact on the world. A research team led by Professor Ki Jang-Seu of the Department of Biotechnology in the Convergence Engineering College of Science and Technology has identified the world's first transcriptomics of toxin synthesis genes in plankton. In particular, the study was published in the March issue of the world-renowned journal “Harmful Algae” and was recognized worldwide. The study is the world's first known study, so it is a proud achievement for our school. Kicker: SM NEWS President of School Interview Online Class Problems Caused by Corona By Chae-Eun Song, Reporter thdcogml@naver.com * This interview was reconstructed based on an article written on April 22 by editor Soo-yeon Song, reporters So-young Yoon and Um Yu-jin Um from the Sangmyung University Newspaper (Korean version). The Sangmyung University Newspaper (Korean version) received questions from April 17 with our students about the changes from Corona 19 through a two-day Everytime session and conducted an interview with President Baek Woong-ki based on a questionnaire. ▲President Baek Woong-ki , https://www.smu.ac.kr/newspaper/interview.do?mode=view&articleNo=708335&article.offset=0&articleLimit=10#/list Most universities decided the entire online class for the first semester. In the case of our university, there was a notice about the period of online lectures and when we would start the classes. Why did you make such a decision? Since February 3, an 18-member emergency response team for infectious diseases has been continuously discussing quarantine and academic schedules for school safety. After the first decision to postpone the starting of the class for two weeks, we watched the progress of Corona 19. However, it seemed difficult to proceed with face-to-face classes. As a result, we proceeded with the "two-week online lecture". As the situation gradually became more serious, we had to extend the online classes again. Judging that it is difficult to conduct online classes for experimental and practical courses, which account for 45% of the total classes, from April 6, classes of less than 10 students in experimental and practical courses were conducted in face-to-face classes on the condition that all teachers, instructors and students agree and take safety measures. From April 27, the 100 percent practical classes and theory with practice classes will also be rearranged and face-to-face classes will be conducted on the same condition. If we continue to offer online classes, why not publish all first semester for online classes like other universities? Also I would like to know the process of making decisions on the part of the school and the method that the notice is delivered to students. Major policy items related to Corona19 are discussed and decided through major decision-making bodies of universities, such as the Infectious Emergency Response Team, the University Innovation Committee, and the School Affairs Committee. In addition to collecting opinions from education consumers, a survey was conducted of students and through a recent meeting with the Student Council, we listened to opinions about inconvenience and improvement. The decided class operation plan has been announced on the school's website. Student representatives are informing us of problems that are raised by the independent student body. In addition, the decisions and important matters of the undergraduate/medical department are notified through texting and notification functions. Currently, 100 percent theoretical subjects are expected to be fully online classes for the first semester and will continue to be applied for the first semester unless there is a special reason. With the agreement of students, teachers, and instructors, face-to-face classes are possible. In addition, some subjects are currently conducting face-to-face classes. For these reasons, the official position of online classes for the first semester cannot be announced. Is there any solution about problems that may occur if we start the offline classes? The 100 percent theory courses will be conducted remotely until the end of the semester. However, the system has been set up to check the fever before the class for subjects that will be conducted through face-to-face lectures from April 27. In addition, students who show abnormal symptoms can be approved public absence. If symptoms of corona are detected after the face-to-face lecture, the student will immediately move to the self-isolation room according to the response manual and the medical personnel of the University Health and Health Care Center will take action and move to the local health center. The class will be stopped immediately following the decision of the Corona 19 response team. Then they will also take action against the students who were with them if any confirmed cases occur based on the results of the test results. In the case of foreign students, the international student support team checks the health status of international students on both campuses every day. In the case of student living centers, they check their fever once a day and if they have fever or abnormal symptoms, they are doing their best to find the measures to prevent the spread of infectious diseases, such as moving to a separate quarantine space. Because of errors about online server, there are too many tasks for attendance. Is there any measure that can improve the online lectures? For the system problems caused by the growing number of e-campus users, the company has improved system performance through the expansion of e-campus operating servers, presented various remote classes such as Google Classroom to help online lectures proceed smoothly. Starting from April 27, the government has activated the progress rate check function so that it can identify attendance. It is difficult to predict what problems will arise with the server problem, so we cannot meet the speed that student’s want, but we are taking immediate action after the server problem occurs. I hope many students understand this part. The task is interaction, which is an essential element of online classes, and I think it can be felt a lot because not only one student takes one subject. This will be resolved through consultations with professors. What is the school doing for students, such as quarantine and supplies, in preparation for the current Corona 19 outbreak? Currently, hand sanitizers have been placed at all entrances to the buildings and emergency masks and thermometers have been distributed to the administration and department offices. Also, solid soap in the bathrooms has been replaced with liquid soap and a fragrance filter has been attached to the elevator buttons. Also the lower floors of the buildings are restricted from operating elevators. In the case of outdoor facilities, rules for using with safety have been prepared and self-isolation rooms are being operated. For the school's quarantine system, the government has carried out quarantine of all buildings and student living quarters. In addition, quarantine three times a week for face-to-face classes and self- quarantine twice a week for academic intelligence officers. In the case of student restaurants, restaurant operators provide their own quarantine every day. Disinfection of public areas, such as doors, toilet handles, and handrails, is carried out at least twice a day. Our university is making a lot of efforts in quarantine and supply of goods that observe the government guidelines and has put a lot of efforts into keeping sufficient supplies available and frequent quarantine. With the extension of cyber lectures, there are demands for tuition refunds or reductions and there are meetings with student representatives. However, students are still not exactly aware of the situation. Currently, most of the university's tuition income is spent on direct education, including labor costs, students' education and scholarship-related budgets. The insufficient budget is filled by using non-tuition income. As mentioned in the last meeting with the student representatives, the cost of labor and facility investment used while conducting online classes is higher than the cost of maintaining facilities such as water and electricity that occur when using the classroom. In addition, students are asked to understand that we cannot immediately meet the demand for the return of tuition fees due to a decrease in enrollment quota, a reduction in entrance fees, related spending due to Corona 19, a decrease in the number of students studying abroad, and a decrease in income from various businesses. As president, I will make constant efforts with professors to listen to the students' inconveniences and complaints caused by online classes and to improve them. Now, all of the freshmen's events are canceled. As a result, freshmen find it hard to know about school news. Do you have any events or programs planned for new students? I feel sorry for freshmen about going online from the entrance ceremony and not being able to visit the school. Our university has not canceled events; it just has postponed them. If the campus is open and face-to-face classes are available, various academic system presentations will be held. Students-related events such as the Seoul Campus Festival, club events, and department MTs will also proceed more fruitful immediately after the end of the Corona pandemic or in the second semester in consultation with the Student Council. Can I ask you to say something to the members of the school who are confused by Corona 19? Currently, there are no confirmed cases from our university, but we will operate academic affairs with prevention for the safety of our school members as the top priority so that it does not happen in the future. We will continue to manage them even if the situation stabilizes. Please understand the situation in which it is not easy to decide starting the class with several problems while maintaining a safe distance. From the 7th week, it is expected that students' satisfaction will gradually increase as online classes are improved from being conducted in various forms. We will continue to improve online classes based on various online support projects and opinions from students and we will use this as an opportunity to innovate online lectures and teaching methods to improve the quality of education. Kicker: SM NEWS Achievement Review of Web Version of the SM Herald With a Survey from the Cheonan Campus Students By Sarah Chae, Editor-in-Chief sarah3fran1@naver.com In the previous edition’s COVER STORY (https://www.smu.ac.kr/eng-newspaper/coverstory.do?mode=view&articleNo=704823#/list), the SM Herald did a check up on the web version and looked at what got better and what needs to be fixed. However, it did not include the opinions of the Cheonan campus students. Due to a mistake, the survey was not properly delivered to them. We have posted an apology letter on our Kakao Channel and Everytime platform and have decided to rewrite the article including the Cheonan campus students’ opinions. Let’s take a look at the survey results and opinions from the Cheonan campus students of SMU. Survey Results* Question 1: Do you know that the English magazine of Sangmyung Univ. has changed its publication method to online news? Question 1-(1): If so, what route did you know it through? Question 2: Do you think the Internet magazine format is better than paper magazines? Question 2-(1): If so, why do you think the Internet article format is better than the paper magazine format? Question 2-(2): If not, why do you prefer the paper magazine format? Curiously enough, 7% (included in the etc. category) of the students who answered this question said they liked the feeling/smell/atmosphere of paper. This category was not written in the answers we provided in the survey. Question 3: Is there anything you feel uncomfortable about while reading the English magazine after it changed its format to an Internet newspaper? Question 4: Please comment from your (a reader's) point of view about how to provide improvement of access to the Internet English magazine. The opinions students suggested can be sorted into ‘1 - The need for more advertising and promotions’ ‘2 - Content suggestions for the magazine,’ and ‘3 - Holding English related activities & events’. Please take a look at the graph below for more info and answers from the SM Herald. 1. More Ads and Promotions Many students said that they found out that the SM Herald exists through the survey, and asked for more active promotions. (1) Most students told us to use SNS accounts more frequently. The SM Herald already has some official SNS accounts. However, we see that we have not used them enough to promote the magazine. We will use SNS more and make it active so everyone can access us easily. Here are our SM Herald SNS Account ID’s. Add us if you are interested. -Instagram ID: smherald9 -Kakao (Plus) Friend ID: thesmherald -Everytime: Search for the ‘English Newspaper’ account in the ‘Group’ part of the ‘Bulletin Board’ menu. We have, in fact, asked to add the SM Herald’s icons and banners to the school website but have been told that it is difficult to do that. However, we will send messages by Kakao Talk and text messages with the SM Herald website link. 2. Content Suggestions Some students asked for (1) Articles with topics that are interesting/helpful/about school, (2) Reader-participating events like quizzes and word puzzles, and to (3) Add more pictures/videos, and make improvements to the web-viewer to make it easier to read. We will do our best to write more high quality, student-related articles, and we will discuss these topics at the idea and review meetings before and after the publishing processes. 3. English Activities and Events Students asked us to open English activities and events. We will open an information and event booth soon, and every year around autumn (mostly November) we are holding an Essay Contest with prize money, too! We will keep every opinion in mind and continue to develop this online platform and the SM Herald. Unfortunately, I cannot send my congratulations directly to you, but instead, it is replaced by an online speech. Sangmyung University was established in 1937, based on the philosophy of national education conceived by Dr. Bae Sangmyung. With the educational ideology of truth, justice, and love in its 76 years of continuous development, Sangmyung University has strived to fulfill the university mission of talent cultivation and scientific research. Last year, our university was selected as a“SW-centered university project '' that was publicly offered by the government with the goal of developing AI-Intergrative human resources, which means that our environment for realizing our vision can be further secured. Today we greet you as the new family of Sangmyung. Together we will move forward to create the “New 100 Years of Sangmyung University”. Proud new students, I would like to hear what your ambitions and plans are to become a college student from each and every one of you, but today I would like to share some recommendations for you as president. First, have the courage to push your limits. The first thing I want to say to you who have overcome the wall of acceptance to this college is not to decide your limits yourself. There are endless possibilities before you. Entering college is not the end of study but the beginning. From now on, each and every challenge you will confront will be a measure to recognize your new abilities. Second, do not be afraid of the future. Maybe your real competitor is not a person, but artificial intelligence and a robot soon. But the future technology you create needs to be able to move in a direction that can be human-friendly, rather than technology that excludes humans. To do this, you need to make a future society in which you actively participate, rather than feel vague fears about the approaching future. Third, you are not alone. We need to develop the ability to listen to other people's opinions together and collect each other's opinions, not alone. Empathize with and talk more to the alumni you'll meet for developing yourselves, for the country, and for the future. New students of Sangmyung University, I hope that college life will be a happy time. Everyone will do their best to help us be proud of our graduates as they progress into society.
