Kicker: SM News Sangmyung University Museum – Displays the History of Sangmyung and Korean Historical Items By Seo-Won Hong, Cub-Reporter eunoia1025@naver.com May 17, 2021 was the 84th anniversary of Sangmyung Academy and the 56th anniversary of the founding Sangmyung University. To celebrate this anniversary, I visited the Sangmyung University Museum to learn about the history of Sangmyung. The museum is located at Pyeongchang-dong in the Jongno District. I will introduce exhibitions related to the history of Sangmyung University and other current exhibitions. <Sangmyung University History Gallery> The Sangmyung university history gallery which is on the first floor displays about Sangmyung such as the history of Sangmyung, education purpose, goals and symbol. <Students Studied in Sangmyung Women’s College of Education> On December 2nd 1937, Dr. Bae Sang-myung established the Sangmyung High School of Performance Arts based on the philosophy of national education. The school was founded with the goal of raising ethnic woman leaders in the Japanese colonial period. Sangmyung school was established in 1945 and later the school became a college. Sangmyung Women’s College of Education was established in 1965 and construction of the new school building in Hongji-dong began on May 17th. The day was designated as the anniversary of the founding Sangmyung University. The school was an education institution only for women. Back then, the society was male-centric and women didn’t have a chance to access education. Dr. Bae Sang-myung wanted that not only men but also women could gain access to education, so she founded the school for women. <Students of the Department of Home Economics> There were three departments, Home Economic’s Education, Art Education, and Physical Education. There is a meaningful reason why these three departments existed. The Departments of Home Economic’s Education originated from the Sangmyung High School of Performance Arts. Creativity is important in art and art education enhances an individual’s creativity. Furthermore, the Department of Physical Education existed because a healthy body is one of the most important things. <The view of the Cheonan campus in 1983 and in the present> The school was elevated to Sangmyung Women’s University in 1983 and the Cheonan campus was opened in 1985. Later in 1996, the school became Sangmyung University for both men and women. <Displayed history of Sangmyung’s symbol> In the museum, we can see the history of the symbol, student clubs, and student council. The museum displays materials donated by seniors so we can see school life in the past. The Sangmyung University Museum displays a wood artworks exhibition in the special exhibition gallery as well as European ceramics in the permanent exhibition gallery. The museum displays historical and cultural items from prehistory to the Joseon Dynasty in the donations gallery. The wood artworks exhibition is held by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism. Sangmyung University celebrated its 84th anniversary on May 14, 2021 with a minimum number of people because of the pandemic situation. Visiting Sangmyung University Museum will be a good experience to students who wants to celebrate our school anniversary. Furthermore, the museum displays different types of exhibitions, so I recommend to visit the museum.

Kicker: SM NEWS Ceremony Appointing Sangmyung University Seoul Campus Honorary Ambassadors in 2021 by Su-Yeon Park, Cub reporter possible921@naver.com The 18th Seoul Campus Student Ambassadors, who play a key role in promoting Sangmyung University, received a certificate of appointment and began their one-year activities. Would you introduce ambassadors for students who don't know about you? We are the honorary ambassador for the 18th Seoul campus of Sangmyung University. We are composed of 20 people from different majors. If it has been recognized as a protocol for university official events and university promotional model activities, we have been focusing more on 'content production activities for university promotion' since last year. Since last year, face-to-face activities have become difficult due to the influence of Covid-19. Instead ofbeing able to do face-to-face activities, we produce various contents that promote the university through the university's official SNS. What are the characteristics of Sangmyung University's honorary ambassadors? Our promotional activities focus not only on people outside the university but also on members of the university. Some contents focus on what is shown to the outside world, such as "Introduction to Departments" and "Sangmyung People," but there are more familiar contents to students, such as "Annual Campaign: Reading," "Sangmyung on the Block" and "Sangmyung Story." We think that "promotion" can make outsiders remember Sangmyung's name and shed light on the identity and competitiveness of the university by illuminating the university as it is. What are the new activities in 2021? We have started a new content called "Sangmyung on the Block" by extending the original "Sangmyung People" to a wider range. While "Sangmyung People" interviewed someone with a certain story, "Sangmyung on the Block" is about interviewing ordinary people. The interviewees could be our students, cafe owners, security guards, and local residents who come to Sangmyung University to study. What activities are you planning for each Department? A. Campus Tour & Protocol Team Currently, it is difficult to go on a campus tour offline because Covid-19 is not stable. Therefore, we are preparing to film an online campus tour so that many students can tour the school without visiting the school in person. In addition, we are planning a real-time campus tour by using Zoom or live streaming through our official YouTube channel, and we would appreciate it if many students would participate. B. Video team In addition to introducing the Departments, we will make information videos about the school needed for those who take the entrance exam, and information for students (how to register for classes, how to participate in extracurricular programs and its benefits and advantages) to help many students. C. Reporter Team We are preparing content that introduces various programs in school to students while conducting the “Sangmyung People” and reading campaigns. We would like to interview students who use the system such as double major and minor and share their experiences to help other students use the program well in school. D. SNS Team We are planning "Sangmyung on the Block". This content tells the story of precious members of Sangmyung University who work hard nearby like Moon Hyun-ho, the head of the University Job Center. We are preparing a "Sangmyung Story" that conveys small issues that occur inside and outside the school, and a "Sangmyung's View" that explores social issues in conjunction with the Departments of Sangmyung University. Lastly, we are also producing an Instagram story filter that can capture the emotions of Sangmyung University's deer, the school's mascot. What are the plans or goals of the honorary ambassador team? Our goal is to make sure that members of Sangmyung University keep the name of Sangmyung in their hearts, and those who are not yet members can remember it in their heads. We will provide various and informative content to build your school spirit and improve the university's awareness. Could you tell our readers anything you want Sangmyung University students to know? We think there are still many students who don't know that Sangmyung University has an official SNS account. The ambassadors are conducting online activities by posting various content on official Instagram, blog, and YouTube in four teams. We may not be good enough because it hasn't been long since we started promoting online, but our ambassadors are all doing their best, so please pay attention and look forward to our next moves. Students can quickly access all of these contents through the official SNS account of Sangmyung University's Seoul campus. Ambassadors are also making efforts to promote our university online as a way of producing content. The active participation of students will help a lot to come up with more informative programs.

Still, we cannot go back to the normal days: going out without a mask, going to concerts, meeting new people, and many more. Even though the current situation might look bad, Sangmyung University is trying its best to support students with their needs, and a modified academic plan is one of them. According to the Department of Academic Management, this semester will be basically based on the level 2 of social distancing. On & Offline Classes Based on Face-to-face lectures Although this semester is based on having face-to-face lectures, students will be able to participate in the way they want to between attending classes on campus or on e-campus. The classroom can take students up to 30% of its maximum capacity, with two meter distancing and constant ventilation. Live lecture via Zoom or Webex, or recorded one will be provided for the students who attend lectures on e-campus. If you go to the Sam-mul portal and send an absent form stating the fear of infection, you can attend lectures online without any trouble or penalty. On & Offline Exams Just like the last semester, midterm and final exams will be either online or offline exams based on each student and professor’s preference. It will vary from class to class, so make sure to check it out on the first lecture of each class. No one can force students to have an exam on campus, or on e-campus. Grade Based on a Curve Professors will determine students’ grade on a curve. However, this semester will start off with type Ⅱ relative evaluation, which students have a higher chance of getting better grades than type Ⅰ. In type Ⅱ, up to 40% students in a class can get a grade of A+ to A, compared to 30% on type Ⅰ. Students who try their best will be more likely get a higher grade this semester. Rapid Change Based on Social Distancing Level The notice also states that the academic plan can be changed based on the government’s level of social distancing. Details regarding this change were not introduced, but it will not drastically change the way this semester is planned. Wearing a mask, temperature checks, and registering QR code before entering a campus building will still be required. With the start of vaccination, the future will be brighter. Until the last day of the global pandemic, Sangmyung University will keep fighting against the virus and providing a good quality of education for all. Kicker: SM NEWS The Fourth Industrial Revolution of Sangmyung University and Development of AI Modules By Eun-Jae Choi, Reporter Weloveeun123@naver.com Sangmyung University is taking the lead as a SW-oriented college by establishing new future advanced majors from this year. Sangmyung University founded the Department of Human Intelligence and Information Engineering related to Korea's first artificial intelligence in 2017. In 2021, six new high-tech departments are being promoted to lead the Fourth Industrial Revolution. However, not only the university but also students are showing many capabilities. So the students are working hard to develop according to the ideal that the school wants. The university held many competitive exhibitions in order that students show their capability and achievement. Students from various departments, including the creativity design competition, received awards. We need to see carefully about results related to the Fourth Industrial Revolution among the awards. Representatively, many things can be learned through the department of 'identifying learner status among non- face-to-face lecture (AI) module systems' by the department of Human Intelligence Information Engineering. On January 21st, 2021, ‘untacticon team’ consisting of Lim jae-young, Ahm yun-ho, Koo dae-hong and Choi-fa-kyung developed an AI module and the team won the grand prize in the AI development category. While continuing to social distance due to Covid-19, many changes are coming and the development of AI modules tailored* to that is of significant value as the way universities operate has also been affected. This system shows the learner state and reaction as an icon of simple facial expression by perceiving face and gesture during non-face-to-face lectures. The intention is that instant interaction is impossible when using non-face-to-face lectures and that learners feel burdened to disclose private spaces like their own rooms. That is why they created the AI program. Through this, many students sympathized with the fact that they made up for the shortcomings of the non-face-to-face lecture and they could see that it was a brilliant idea. <The photo that student who developed the module is running the program and Photographs of students who have developed> Tailored: Made to fit well There are six major new departments, including four on the Seoul campus and two on the Cheonan campus. ‘FinTech major’ is an innovative department that was opened in anticipation of changes in financial services and industries through the convergence* of finance and IT. "Big Data Convergence Major" is a major department that can lay the heart and foundation of the Fourth Industrial Revolution through ICT convergence that can gain insights from data using big data analysis technology. "Smart Production Major" will go through a curriculum in the manufacturing and service based on ICT by creating talented people who will lead innovation in manufacturing and service sectors. "Intelligent IOT Convergence Major" is a key based discipline* in the field of intelligent information engineering today, which can encompass* hardware and software, and teaches deep learning, drones, and AR-related knowledge. "AR.VR Media Design Major" plans to develop various content production and planning skills by describing expressions on ultra-realistic future strategies. Lastly, “Green Smart City Department” will train convergent experts in urban regeneration. Convergence: It can be said to mean integration, convergence, and complexity. It is often used as a term for digital convergence in IT field. Discipline: an example of the rules of conduct set for maintaining order or institution Encompass: include many things As new departments are emerging, and these new departments deal with the deepening part of the IT field, it can be seen that preparation of the basic part of the IT field has become more important than in the past. Even if it is not a related department, it can be seen that the atmosphere of the era of the fourth industry and the future are important in the curriculum, where computing subjects are essential as cultural subjects. Even before the new departments, students won the Defense Minister's Award at the Korea SW Convergence Hackathon Competition last year, and three teams won the best prize at the Industrial Security Creative Design Competition hosted by the Korea Institute of Industrial Security Research. In addition to developing AI modules, Sangmyung University promotes many things to nurture talented people who can lead the future industry, and the students can also feel great passion for their dreams. Therefore, the ability of new department students to be further subdivided and innovatively opened at Sangmyung University is expected to continue to be positive for the development of our school and students. <Winners of the SW Convergence Hackathon Competition and the Industrial Security Creative Design Competition> Many talents following the Fourth Industrial Revolution are emerging through school competitions. The aforementioned 'identifying listener status among non-face-to-face structure (AI) module systems' can complement the deficiencies and inconveniences that humans feel in the digital age with cutting-edge technology and show that it is that important. It is expected that students who are recognized for their value in line with the changed educational system due to Corona and can implement the development of the fourth Industrial Revolution due to the change will continue to be seen in the future. Kicker: SM NEWS (PSSAP) What is PSSAP? Yeong-Jin Choi, Reporter pch39067@gmail.com Do you know what PSSAP is? PSSAP is an online global program which was test operatedduring summer vacation and held officially during winter vacation for Sangmyung students. It is very hard for the students to study abroad because of the worldwide Coronavirus these days. Therefore, Sangmyung University offers students a good chance to be educated internationally even located in our own house. Still, lots of students do not know what the program is. Consequently, I would like to ask for more students to give more attention to PSSAP. A picture of Studying English What is the merit when we participate in the program? Students who join the program are given the chance to be firstly chosen at the seasonal language and culture education program, SSAP, that will be held atthe Seoul campus later on. Plus, if the students who qualify the certain level of scholarship attend the program more than 15 hours total, they can get the SSAP scholarship as well. The qualifications to attend the program are not as hard as we think. If students currently attend less than 7 semesters, achievea GPA over 2.0, and take more than 12 credit of the semester right before attending the program, they are ready to register for it. The PSSAP program is very convenient as it can be either registered or attended online. SMU Global Industries Study Tour in 2019 It is very unfortunate that students who wants to participate in the global program held abroad are prohibited because of the Coronavirus. Before the virus happened, Sangmyung has offered a fair chance for the students to both study at the university abroad and experience foreign business by visiting their enterprises. Moreover, Sangmyung is very highly spoken for its global communication programs, which is a concept that includes exchange programs, multiple degree programs, and a language study abroad for a short period of time. Sangmyung not only offers Western universities for the students’ education. Aside from the Western countries, like the United States of America, the Czech Republic, Germany,and France, Asian universities located in China, Taiwan, Japan, Russia, and Kazakhstan are the major universities where Sangmyung has partnership. Though Sangmyung university has offered such a good chance like PSSAP for students who wanted to be educated internationally at their own home, it is a misfortune that many of the students still do not know that this program exists. What kind of creative solutions did you come up with? Overall, what did you accomplish? Not only making great accomplishments but also sharing them is also meaningful. Let’s find out what accomplishments that Sangmyung University’s students made for the last semester! Creative-Convergence Performance Contest Held Last Semester <Sangmyung University creative-convergence performance contest held on December 1st, 2020> The creative-convergence performance contest of Sangmyung University is a competition held every semester with the aim of sharing the performance of “Sangmyung Oreum education” linking major, liberal arts, and comparative curriculums to foster students' self-directed learning capability, creative convergence problem solving skills, and cooperative learning skills. It had been held offline on campus since 2015. However, in the second semester last year, due to Covid-19, it was held as an one-and-off-line convergence based on the O2O(online-to-online) service . There were presentations of students through Webex(Real-time online video conferencing program) on the achievements of creative convergence education programs such as the Capstone Design Contest, Oreum-Start program, SM-URP, presentation contest, Study-Mutual-Plus, etc. In the second part of the event that followed, a K-MOOC special lecture "Human Intelligence, Agent Intelligence" was broadcast live. Various Achievements of Students What contests did Sangmyung University students participate in? What did they do in the contest? Let me introduce a few. Firstly, Capstone Design Contest. It is a program sharing major-linked results made through major-deepening education courses. For example, “umm team” from the Living Arts major designed a new type of wall-hanging folding chair, breaking the uniformity of the same folding chair. They said that they asked for a lot of advice on Euljiro Street for the frame-type design. <Umm team from the Living Arts major> You can participate in a team consisting of three to ten students who take the Capstone Design course. It is divided into major tracks & industry-academic-linked tracks, and accordingly, you can apply for the support fund. It is a program for the freshmen that set activity goals for one semester, choosing team project assignments that professors set in the class or topics which students are interested in. For example, team “Sangmyung games” from Game major, developed a puzzle game based on the JAVA programming that they learned during the semester. It is a program that conducts academic research activities with the aim of presenting academic conferences under the guidance of professors. For example, team “SM-UP” from the Global Management major, wrote an academic paper titled “Suggestion of the Growth Direction of Domestic Pharmaceutical Industry Through the Analysis of Innovative Pharmaceutical Companies in Korea.” It aimed at suggesting a direction to latecomers by analyzing Celltrion, a global life company. Two to five students except the freshmen can participate, and each team can get a 600,000 won scholarship after submitting the result. Unlike the contests mentioned above, individuals or pairs of students can participate. It is a contest making a presentation on a given topic, and the topic of the last semester was “Non-contact era, what about us?” For example, a student, Choi Sung-ji, from the Korean Language Education major, made a presentation about the suffering of the disabled she felt in the non-contact era through external activities. She said through her presentation, there will be a growing social awareness of the disabled who will feel “non-contact” as an eternal pain. Moreover, as we share the various presentations, students will naturally be able to improve their communication skills. <Choi Sung-ji from Korean Language Education major> The contest has preliminary rounds, and it awards the Grand prize / the Most Excellent prize / the Excellent prize. Kicker: SM NEWS “A Clinic to Cure Your Fear of English” Interview with Prof. Samuel Alexander Denny, Jr. by Nam-HoYun, Reporter tree32847@gmail.com Studying English can be hard and challenging sometimes. In fact, studying alone makes it harder for you to make actual progress. To help out students who are stressed out because of learning English, Sangmyung University is providing a clinic that can ease the pain of speaking or writing English. To find out more about the clinic, The SM Herald sat down with Prof. Samuel Denny from the Department of English Education on November 16, 2020 (socially distanced of course). Would you introduce yourself for the students who don’t know about you? I come from Fort Worth, Texas in the US, and I have been teaching here since March of 2006, for almost 15 years. Starting as far back as the beginning of my time at Sangmyung, I have been teaching at the English Village, which is now called as the GLC, Global Language Center, in addition to teaching my undergraduate classes as well as classes at the Continuing Education Center. At the GLC, we run small group classes where students can study in a more relaxed atmosphere. I really love teaching these classes because they are more intimate, and there is more time for me to get to know the students more closely. Therefore, teaching these clinic classes has been one of my additional duties that I have had since day one. That is also the reason why I have taught these classes pretty much every semester, and I still enjoy doing it. What actually is the English clinic? It is basically a tutoring class. We offer two different types of classes: face to face classes and group classes. Face to face, or one on one classes are individualized tutoring where I am there to answer any questions or English learning needs. In other words, these classes focus on each student’s needs. They can talk about anything they want to. It can be free talking or specific issues they have regarding English. On the other hand, group classes have a maximum of ten students. As a small group, we choose a topic for each week. They generally run for about 4 weeks. For example, a common topic might be “your favorite restaurants near our university.” Then, students can share information about the different restaurants or cafes near our campus that they like. Or it could be something like their favorite movies. Once the topic is decided, each student prepares a short talk about the topic. Then every time a student finishes his/her speech, other students ask questions about the talk. This goes on until the last student gets some questions. In short, it is a series of Q&A back and forth. Can students choose between the two? Yes, it is their choice. When you register for the clinic, the staff at the GLC will ask you which one you would like to participate in. However, you have to keep in mind that, students can participate in only one individual class in a semester. For the group classes, students can join as many times as they want, as long as we have enough students to fill a class. What can you brag about the clinic? Anybody who is serious about learning English needs to use English “a lot”. Students often complain to me about how hard it is to find the actual place to practice English in Korea. It is like a hidden gem on our campus; very few people seem to know about it. Besides, you will probably have to pay some money to do the same thing if you go to a hak-won. However, this clinic is free of charge, and it also gives you 2 points of extracurricular activity! Thus, I really wish more students would know about it, and take advantage of these programs. How does the clinic prepare for the global pandemic? Due to the spread of coronavirus, we have moved everything online. Last semester, I ran the programs using Zoom, the online meeting program. However, we are now using the Webex system that our university is recommending for this semester. As you know, the health and safety of our students is obviously the most important thing. Hence, we will continue to hold it online until the situation is much better. Frankly, I think the need for this clinic is even greater because of (or thanks to) the global pandemic. Lots of students feel isolated staying at home. They might want some interaction with other students or someone to talk to. If you cannot come to campus but want to engage with not only me, but also other students, this is a great chance for you and your English skills. What is the main reason for students to participate in the programs? It is mainly because they want to practice their English. I think a lot of students just feel that they do not have any opportunity to genuinely practice English. They like English, and they want to improve it. Yet, the students do not have enough chances in Korean society to use their English. That is why most students come to the clinic. Are there any memorable moments about the clinic? This was one of my clinic classes. At the end of the semester, they brought a cake for me, which was very meaningful. They were very thoughtful. Although this picture was taken many years ago, I still remember these students. Furthermore, at the end of each semester, I used to share a meal together with the group classes somewhere nearby our campus. The students were always from different majors. Getting to know each other and watching them making new friends made me smile. Fortunately, we take a photo at the end of each clinic class. No wonder why I have so many happy memories about it, right? (Chuckle) Prof. Samuel Denny with His Memorable Students What is your advice to the students who are having a hard time with English? You need to find something related to English that motivates you. It could be something like a TV drama such as Friends or Modern Family, which has many seasons you can watch for an extended period of time. Watching movies, making foreign friends or listening to pop music can be exciting and joyful ways to learn English. Each student is going to be motivated in a different way. With that being said, you need to find whatever it is related to English that you are into. There is no magic way to master English. If you really want to be good at English, you need to be exposed to it frequently. It will be difficult at first for you to learn English all by yourself. However, I am always here to help you. 2020 is now coming to an end. Of course, it has been a rocky year with so many bad and sad things happening. Still, you should not let this year go like this. If you could not go out and enjoy the campus life while being unmotivated, it is a great time to join the English Clinic with Prof. Samuel Denny for your English and new relationships. John F. It will not be long before we can see more advanced artificial intelligence (AI) unmanned stores at Sangmyung University. On July 22th, Sangmyung University exchanged business agreements with USE (Urban Sharing Economy), to open an AI(artificial intelligence) Deep Learning Institute. USE (Urban Sharing Economy) is a regional-based shared economy business platform established in 2018. Its goal is to implement a Sharing company model, using core technology such as FinTech payment and AI business model as an infrastructure.Although it is a small venture company, it is growing rapidly, receiving TI-3 (the highest grade in technology) in the NICE Technology Credit Assessment in June. It currently focuses on installing, distributing and expanding “AISS Go (3.0ver)”, an AI-based unmanned vending machine. The unmanned vending machine “AISS Go” has been recognized as a patent for all processes of opening doors when the QR code is read, taking out desired products and recognizing products with AI vision cameras. There is a basic type, and a design type that adds external design details. While existing vending machines already have a set purpose such as selling coffee and beverages, but the AISS Go can replace products regardless of items at any time after deep learning, making efficient sales. Moreover, it would be easy to start a business and switch industries. While untact consumption is rising in the Posco - Corona era, AISS Go could be used well in many places, including Sangmyung University. Both sides are planning to install an AI unmanned store using AISS Go at Sangmyung University. At the same time, students could have opportunities to experience and study AI systems, thereby, improving unmanned commerce system technology. Baek Woong-ki, Sangmyung University President, said "We will help each other by displaying local small businesses' products at unmanned stores." Park Jin-seok, CEO of USE, said "We started research with Sangmyung University's Industrial-Academic Cooperation Group while considering improving the speed of deep learning. We will expand our business agreements to create a new AI unmanned commerce market.”

Kicker: The Grand Prize of 40th English Essay Contest The weight of ‘A’ by Min-ki Hong, Film and Video student My life seems to have a sort of a cycle that starts with full of confidence and ends with self reflection. The cycle is repeated on a two-year basis. For instance, two years of myself as a freshman, two years of me as a soldier and two years of myself right now. These days, I found what makes this repetition compulsion. It was none other than the weight of ‘A’. My life as a twenty years old and being a university student meant a lot to me. So I tried to suck everything surrounded by me like a calf which is a minute old. I tried to absorb even pathetic things like the aesthetics of barley fermentation in a beer that we drank in ‘MiniStop Convi’. Pretending to be an intellectual made me feel great about myself. Evenmore witnessing marching of A’s without much effort made me realize a lot of students in university do not study that much like when they were in high school. And then I started to feel like I could understand something about my major, cinema, or something in my life and the world itself. My life seemed finally set free. ‘Veriotas vos liverabit’, like this phrase from John’s Gospel from the New Testament, I felt like the truth did set me free. However truth was never willing to tell me what it really was. Like the protagonist in the movie “Old Boy”, I thought I could have my revenge on the antagonist. But I still couldn’t know what actually really happened. Even after I joined the army for my mandatory military service, I kept struggling for recognition. For instance, to be useful for this organization, I tried to get a ‘1st class warrior’ title. ‘1st class warrior’ was simply given to those who run fast, and shoot well. It meant the same as the A’s that I got at university. I had been obsessed with visible letters that keep me arrogant, that give me recognition of myself, that justify me. I struggled for those letters, divine and also shallow letters. I can be enlightened or a killing machine with those letters. My life of 4 years after twenty years olds shows a pattern of itself clearly. First I get ‘A’ or ‘1st class’ that defines me, then I’m obsessed with it and struggle to get it, then get an ‘A’ again that means nothing and also means everything. But at some point of coming back to society from the army, I realized that I actually know nothing. Can I be someone who I always wished for? Does really ‘A’ Define me what I am? I felt like not having any talent or knowledge about my major or anything. All this knowledge that I thought I understood was not. Everything I learned for four years was common knowledge to recognize myself as one small prospective student. After this certain feeling, I felt like becoming a little elementary school kid who sat down in front of the piano to learn a Czerny 60. Feeling of facing a wall that never can get over. That’s what I feel about my major right now. My life may be full of shameful regrets; however, I don’t want to blame myself. I want to blame a shallow alphabet that made a fool of me. That letter gave me an intense narcissism and a conviction about rewards from trying hard. ‘A’ gave me a sourceless hope, but it gave me endless depression too. All those cycles that I experienced was from the weight of A. I never earned those letters. Professors and commanders gave me that. How did they measure it? Were they aware that A would be heavy to someone who tries hard? Or did they give it away as a cheap condolence? My life is now centered on the fact that I need to measure how heavy A is exactly. To me, ‘A’ is still heavy. But not as a seal of approval of knowing something, It is heavy as a burden that forces me to be arrogant and also that forces me to overcome conceit to get a truth. I need to struggle again to overcome ‘A’, not to get an ‘A’. My life’s repetition of compulsion has to be ended with this stance of mind. I don’t want to be arrogant anymore and feel regret about this. I should get away from the visible letters pressing me down. I might be in vain without those letters. But also I can be free because nothing can justify me without myself. I need to walk towards salvation or truth, not recognition.

This means that listening is twice as important as speaking.” It is a famous saying of the Talmud, which is a very important part of communication. In the event of a problem, both sides must listen to each other's opinions carefully rather than one-sided notification. This seems like the advice for what happened to Sangmyung University. Conflicts between Sangmyung University and students reached its peak this year. For the first time, there were many articles, Internet searches and complaints about Sangmyung University. What happened? Let’s go back to the beginning and look back step by step. 1. Online Lecture Due to Corona Virus After the Corona-19 outbreak, all elementary, middle, high schools and universities started online classes under quarantine guidelines. Sangmyung University was no exception. The opening of the class was postponed, the entire class turned online, and face-to-face classes were limited only for small subjects with less than 10 students. As everything went online for the first time, many complaints were raised, including sever problems and tuition return. 2. Meeting of Online Lectures and Tuition Return Unprecedented remote classes have led to new discussions. Therefore, on July 20th, a meeting with the president of the university about class operation plan of the second semester and tuition return was held. According to a report the next day, the second semester's classes would be face-to-face classes in principle, and the tuition would be returned by abolishing the grade scholarship and paying everyone a "Corona 19 Special Scholarship.” The school notified students without any prior polls or gathering of opinions, so students were very dissatisfied. In response, the Student Council said they would conduct a student survey, gather opinions and deliver them in the meeting scheduled for the 24th. 3. Delay of the Meeting & the “Chonggong” Movement However, at 11 p.m. the day before the meeting, the school notified students that the meeting was delayed. In fact, a lawsuit was filed against Sangmyung University at a “meeting which demands a refund of tuition fees” the day before the meeting, so the school needed basic discussions on it and delayed the meeting. However, the school did not tell students about it. Therefore, to students who had class registration day just around the corner, the situation was nothing but the school tried to avoid the current situation and refused to communicate with students. Eventually, the students agreed to do “Chonggong” of the most searched words on July 24th, which means the mass movement to make “Sangmyung University, Communicate” the trend keyword on major portal sites. Many students also wrote posts about the situation and students’ opinions on social networking sites such as blogs. The main opinions of students were as follows: 1. Stop the principle of face-to-face classes that cannot guarantee the safety of students. 2. Do not replace the return of tuition by abolishing the academic scholarship. Keep the existing grade scholarship intact, while paying the Corona scholarship separately. 3. Communicate with students and find solutions together. The Chonggong movement was so powerful that it ranked second on real-time the most-searched keyword section on NAVER portal. Several articles about this situation were also published. 4. After the Movement Other meetings were held on July 27th and 30th urgently. Eventually, the school paid the academic scholarship and returned about 7% of tuition separately. In terms of face-to-face classes, it was decided to give a choice to students, but corona virus has been getting worse, so all classes turned online for two weeks after the opening of the class. We interviewed several people about the happening. The leader of the movement said, “It was possible thanks to many students who participated passionately.” and expressed his gratitude. The Student Council said, “The happening clearly shows that we did not do our role as a Student Council well. We are aware of this and will focus on gathering students' opinions and continuously communicating with them by actively utilizing Instagram, Facebook, and the Saemmul portal. We will let students know if students' opinions are well reflected in the process of discussion with the school.” Professor Kang Sang-Wook, who is a director of the Student Career Development Center said, “It made me think that we should make more efforts to connect the Administration and students. It will be important for the Ministry of Student Affairs to cooperate with the relevant ministries so that students’ opinions can be delivered promptly, and we will pay more attention to this. In addition, students may be displeased thinking that school decisions are late, but sensitive issues require careful consideration, so I would appreciate it if students widely understand that it is a process to make the best choice." Communication is very important to correct misunderstandings and conflicts. I hope this incident makes us realize the importance of communication and always keep our ears open to form a healthy and democratic relationship.
