제 12 호 The 2021 Liberal Arts and Personality Day

Kicker: SM NEWS The 2021 Liberal Arts and Personality Day By Sol-Hyang Park, Editor-in-chief cookie7152@naver.com Sangmyung University held "Liberal Arts and Personality Day" from November 22nd to December 3rd to share the achievements gained through the liberal arts curriculum, Liberal Arts and Personality class. The event held by the Gyedang Cultural Education Center, was opened both offline and online. The offline event was held from 10am to 5pm on the first basement floor of the Seoul Campus “Miraebaeknyeon” Hall. Sangmyung University's Liberal Arts and Personality curriculum aims to help new students adapt to the school. It is a curriculum conducted by a small group consisting of professors and students through conversations and discussions on academic, life, and values while forming intimate and personal relationships.The curriculum consists of the following topic : " -maeumsaegim- " to understand and know more about universities, " -maeumchaenggim- " to improve school adaptability and self-understanding through psychological tests, " -maeumnanum- " to learn lessons through lectures by celebrities, and " -maeumeodeum- " to promote cultural literacy through culture and arts. This offline event shared what was obtained through this mind project in brochures and photos. It also displayed reviews of Liberal Arts and Personality classes. Snacks were provided to 50 first-comers everyday, and an event that took polaroid pictures with Sumungi (Sangmyung University’s mascot- ) was also held. In particular, the "One Book, One Sangmyung" event is an annual event. Students vote for the books to be recommended, and the selected one will be reflected as a must-read book in the Liberal Arts and Personality class for freshmen in 2022. This year, "The Stranger" was the must-read book and last year was “Demian.” In the case of offline events, there were many students participating, and the atmosphere was very lively due to the various events mentioned. It seemed to give and receive good influences between students. I hope there will be more events for students to participate in and appreciate in person in the future.

Graduation exhibitions are indispensable for these majors, but offline exhibitions had been briefly dampened by COVID-19. However, they are being actively held this year. Among them, I will cover the graduation exhibition of students from the Department of Fine Arts. The 54th Graduation Exhibition of the Department of Fine Arts The 54th graduation exhibition of the Department of Fine Arts at Sangmyung University College of Culture and Arts was opened at the gallery “Wolhae” on the first basement floor of “Miraebaeknyeon”Hall of Sangmyung University Seoul Campus. The graduation exhibition was held from November 22nd to December 3rd. The exhibition was held at not only at the gallery, but also at Space Zero, an art museum. The theme of the exhibition is 'heating', which means the passion that students feel while producing their works. Seventeen prospective graduates participated in the exhibition, and their Korean paintings, Western paintings, and sculpture works were on display. The history of the Fine Arts major which held its 54th graduation exhibition this year is very deep. Since the opening of the department in 1965, it has produced numerous artists, sculptors, and installation art artists, and they have actively participated in Korean works of art and on the world stage. The department has had many difficulties in students' studies, production of works, and guidance from professors due to the restrictions of activities caused by COVID-19. However, they organized the exhibition of works of prospective artists who overcame difficult times with their passion for art. Exhibitions that Revitalize the University Like this, in contrast to last year where the exhibition schedule was almost canceled due to COVID-19, a series of exhibitions by design and art departments are energizing the university. Lee Sang-eun, a professor at the Department of Fine Arts, said, "I am proud of the students who overcame difficult times with passion and sublimated them into wonderful works. I hope many people will appreciate the works and encourage students." In addition to this graduation exhibition, assignments and graduation exhibitions of students majoring in design universities have also been held. Starting in May, 324 works of each major project of the departments of Design and Arts were exhibited at Sangmyung Gallery in the Design Hall. (Design departments such as Industrial Design major , Ceramic Design major, and Photography and Video Media major, etc.) A university official said, "The various exhibitions in the design and arts field held throughout the year at the Sangmyung University Gallery allow students to exchange ideas for major selection and convergence of academic fields.” Displaying one's work and appreciating other students' works can inspire another passion and new inspiration. Even in the situation of COVID-19, I hope that Sangmyung University students will be given these opportunities steadily in the future.

Kicker: SM NEWS Sangmyung University’s Newly Reorganized Homepage Intro By Sol-Hyang Park, Editor-in-chief cookie7152@naver.com The website of Sangmyung University's admissions office has been reorganized under the new concept of "Sangwat."Since the national entrance exam for university ended on November 18th, students who are about to apply for the university through the exam are expected to visit the university's website more frequently. Accordingly, Sangmyung University reorganized the intro page to make it easier and more interesting to access the information they wanted. New Homepage Reminding Us of Harry Potter The reorganized intro page is the work of Park Sun-min, a sophomore majoring in animation in the SW Convergence Department of Convergence Engineering. Under the motto of "University that Communicates with Students," the homepage attracts attention by expressing Sangmyung University's various fields of study as game characters which remind us of professors in Hogwarts of Harry Potter. There are game characters of Hong Sung-tae, the head of the Admissions Department, and other 10 college principals dressed in medieval costumes. The president and the head of the admissions office characters are welcoming students at the center of the page. Furthermore, the principal of Culture and Arts holds a large art brush, and the principal of Education holds a book in one hand and a baton in another hand, just like they are teaching students. If you move your mouse over these characters, the names of each character and the field they are in charge of will be introduced. If you click them, the email will be copied to the clipboard, and you can send questions about entering that department by e-mail and receive answers directly. Student Park Sun-min, who worked on the illustration of the intro page, said, "I worked hard with the hope that those who visit the website would be interested in our university." This special intro page will be operated during the recruitment of new students for 2022. The page is also gaining great popularity and attention on the Internet, and was found in other university communities or SNS, and articles. It is important for the university to promote the university's awareness and stimulate curiosity in this way. I hope that Sangmyung University will continue to widely promote itself through these creative ways.

I didn't have a smart phone as well as a cell phone. So when I drew imaginary paintings on Science Day, I always imagined myself taking classes at home on my tablet. What about you? Have you ever imagined a future like this? In fact, at that time, I didn't really want to be able to have an untact lecture, but I just vaguely thought that there might be a future like this. How about comparing this imagination to now? It's not about the future anymore. Now, it has become a very natural appearance of today. In fact, this imagination was only for a young child who knew nothing about education. I mean a little kid who didn't want to get up early in the morning and go to school. It was inevitable due to COVID-19, but now the children are taking school classes on tablets at their homes. Educationally, this is very unfortunate. We are facing several crises with untact lectures. The first is the lack of direct experience. In the school field, we can experience many things. Just thinking about our school days, we did various experiments in the science room and experienced ecology through field trips. On the other hand, all experiences in untact lectures are inevitably indirect and limited. Of course, untact lectures have the advantage of having no time and space restrictions. However, experience through virtual reality is inevitably inferior to direct experience. The second is that it is difficult for children to learn the value of the community. After the untact lecture, the stress of many middle and high school students decreased compared to offline lectures. Since they don't go to school, the stress they had at school was reduced. But if the stress at school is solved by not going to school, can it be seen as a real solution? Various conflicts arise in the school field, such as relationships with friends, relationships with teachers, and class problems. It's probably too natural in a space where people are together. In the process of resolving conflicts, children can learn to treat people and understand community life. It is impossible in untact lectures where only indirect communication is possible. The last one is disconnection from society. Children who don't learn to be considerate of others and don't understand community life will gradually get used to this situation. Children who only think about themselves, are comfortable working alone, and are accustomed to handling everything untact. In the end, this society will be bound to be cut off. COVID-19 seems to have caused these educational problems, but in fact, this is the chronic problem of our 'Korean education' intensified due to COVID-19. At this rate, even if COVID-19 stabilizes and we can live a normal life, there is a high possibility that the aforementioned problems will not be solved. So what should we do? It's time to think about it together. Perhaps the answer can be found in communication. School is a space where children learn various values of life and establish their own values. But when we think of the school education we went through, we can see that this is not the case. Rather, our school education is encouraging competition among children. Now this society is no different from games where only winners can survive. In fact, the logic of a capitalist society is frighteningly simple. It's hard for individuals to change their social structure. To survive, we have no choice but to compete with others. It's a very unfortunate thing. However, it is not right for school education to stand by and even encourage children's competition. The more that happens, the more schools should teach children how to understand, care for, and live together. Now children should be able to think for themselves. Why do we humans live? Why do we live in a society where we have no choice but to compete? Is this the right competition? What can we do for a fair society where everyone can be happy? What should I do? We should stop injecting the value of vested interests into children and help them have a world they dream of on their own. A small bird breaks an egg and comes out. I hope our children, adults, Korean education, and Korean society can now break through eggs to build a better education system/society.

제 12 호 Prof. Denny’s Lifelong Education Class

Kicker: SM NEWS Prof. Denny’s Lifelong Education Class By Sol-Hyang Park, Editor-in-chief cookie7152@naver.com Sangmyung University's Lifelong Education Center has been providing lifelong education for community residents who live near our university. In particular, Professor Samuel Alexander Denny, Jr's Lifelong English Education class has been steadily conducted face-to-face for over 10 years, even in the midst of the Corona Pandemic. Thankfully to the professor and students, I attended this class for a while and was able to cover the scene. I briefly attended a class starting at 10 a.m. in M112 and conducted interviews. The class usually runs twice a week from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., and on that day, there were about seven students in their 40-50s. Before the class began, they exchanged cookies and other snacks as if they were used to it. They also had small conversations with the professor about how they have been doing or Netflix dramas. In the atmosphere full of laughter, the class was held. The class started with full of joy and laughter. As they studied an English book and articles, they took notes themselves and did not hesitate to ask questions and answer in English. They continued natural English conversations based on the contents of the class. During the break in the middle of class, I was able to interview Professor Samuel Denny and some of the students. Interview with Prof. Denny 1. How long have you been running this class? - It has been well over 10 years. I’ve been studying with these class members for such a long time, and that’s why this class is like my Korean family, not just a regular class. 2. What kind of contents do you usually teach? - Firstly, we study based on the book “Chicken Soup for the Soul”, which is a famous self-help book. After the break, we study news articles from the Korea Times, or New York Times, etc. I try to select articles that are related to the students’ lives such as about traveling, food, health, etc. It’s because we’re here to share our stories, learn about each other, and improve our life quality. A part of "Chicken Soup for the Soul" & An article that the professor selected that day 3. Are there any moments when you feel rewarded or proud while doing lifelong education? - Every class I feel this way. I love this class so much. The students give me a lot of support and encouragement in my life in Korea. I believe teaching is a two-way street. Teachers give a lot, and students give back a lot. For me, this class is a wonderful example. I get so much back from my students, and I’m always super proud of them. 4. What is the big difference between the lifelong education class and the general classes you teach with university students? - In classes with university students, we inevitably feel pressure of time and tests. Whereas, in this class, we don’t have to worry about them. If we want, we can have deeper discussions, spending more time. In some ways, I feel more freedom to be able to discuss the issues more deeply. 5. Please tell us what you think the importance of lifelong education. - As we age, we need to exercise our mind to stay mentally active. For example, learning a foreign language is good for brain health, and preventing diseases like Alzheimer’s or dementia. Like this learning keeps motivating us, and it should never end. Furthermore, considering the aging society in Korea, lifelong education will be more needed and expanded not just for learning English but in fields like art, music etc. Interview with Students Thankfully, I could interview two students of the class. I gathered two answers for the same questions. 1. How did you come to take this class? - I came here with the introduction of my friend. / I took several classes at other educational & cultural centers, and I settled in this class because I like the professors so much, especially Prof. Denny. 2. What are you satisfied with about this class? - Since we are old, it is difficult to speak in English with friends at the right level. However, it is good to freely meet friends of the right level and talk in English here. The professor is also wonderful, so I am very grateful for the class. / Through the book, we can learn many expressions for daily conversations. Also, we can study hot topics about current issues that fit our level. The materials are very helpful in many ways. 3. Is there anything you want more from Sangmyung University’s lifelong education classes? - I’m satisfied enough, but I want to improve my English skills and have classes with a higher level in the future. / Since there is a high demand for the humanities, I hope there will be more diverse humanities classes offered. For example, it would be nice to learn history in English. The Professors and students in this class have enjoyed special days by singing carols on Christmas or having Halloween parties etc. They also said they often have lunch together. Through this class, they have been communicating with a strong bond. The professor and students have been steadily connected for a long time. Like the professor said, such lifelong education will become more important in the future. I hope lifelong education will become more diverse so that more elderly people can feel the joy of learning and stay mentally healthy. Once again, I would like to express my gratitude to those who allowed me to attend the class and have interviews.

Kicker: SM NEWS (INAUGURATION) Inauguration of the New President of Sangmyung University, Hong Seong-tae By Seo-Won Hong, Reporter eunoia1025@naver.com The 14th President of Sangmyung University, Hong Seong-tae On September 27th, the inauguration ceremony of the 14th president of Sangmyung University was held at the Seoul Campus Centuria Building Mille Hall. The inauguration was held following social distancing and quarantine guidelines. The ceremony was conducted minimizing the number of participants to help prevent the spread of COVID-19; however, it was streamed on the Sangmyung University official YouTube Channel. On September 24th, the Sangmyung Academy, our university’s educational foundation, appointed Hong Seong-tae, a professor of Global Business Administration, as the 14th president of Sangmyung University. The new president, Hong Seong-tae, entered Seoul National University’s Department of Business Administration in 1981 and received a master's degree and doctorate in Business Administration from the graduate school. He had field experience, working for the Bank of Korea and KT. In 1998, he was appointed as a professor at Sangmyung University and led the university's educational innovation by serving as the Vice-President of the Seoul Campus, the Dean of the Office of Planning, the Dean of Research Affairs, and the Dean of the College of Business Administration. Off of Campus, he was also the president of the Aviation Management Society of Korea as a management expert. At the ceremony, he said, “Despite the rapidly changing crisis in university education, we must continue our challenges to lead society and move toward becoming a prestigious university in the world.” The specific action plans he mentioned were as follows. The first thing mentioned was smooth communication and interaction. He then promised to prioritize students who are the center of the future society and the integration of Sangmyung education. In addition, he promised to become a global university, to concentrate on university management, and enhance the brand value of our university.The new president, Hong Seong-tae said, “The development of our university has been the result of the efforts and dedication of the members of Sangmyung”, and suggested, “we will continue to work together for the university to develop into a globally prestigious university.” His four-year term as the 14th president started on September 27th, 2021. It was selected as the SW-centered university project promoted by the Institute for Information & Communication Technology Planning & Evaluation (IITP) of the Ministry of Science and ICT in September 2019 and aims to foster talent to lead the new world that AI will bring. They are opening several programs so that all students can utilize SW and AI capabilities to demonstrate these capabilities in their major fields. Earlier this year, 'Elastic Engineer Training' was also established in the university's education program. Let's find out how to train SW professionals with Elastic, and what SW-related programs have been launched this year in the university. Sangmyung University SW-centered University Business Group Sangmyung University's SW-centered university project group was selected as the SW-centered university project by the Ministry of Science and ICT's Information and Communication Planning Evaluation (IITP) in September 2019 and is conducting SW-based, core, and convergence education with the goal of fostering talent to lead the new world. Before being selected for the project, Sangmyung University decided to establish a "SW Convergence Department" in February 2019 to foster new SW talent that will lead the future of convergence of SW, humanities and arts. The SW Convergence Department included the Department of Computer Science, Human Intelligence Information Engineering, and Game, and established an animation department to achieve game and synergy. Since it was selected as a SW-centered university with the aim of fostering AI talent in September 2019, it will be able to provide more advanced AI education and AI convergence education to students of the SW Convergence Department. Business Group Training Program According to the educational structure, the SW Convergence Department has been launched to operate an efficient curriculum. It has launched an AI-majoring track and is conducting artificial intelligence education together. The hands-on environment presents educational and hands-on spaces. It has been built so that students can use the equipment freely. Not only majors but also non-majors are allowed to attend the curriculum, and education is being conducted in a different way. In addition, there are programs to support start-ups, SW camps, special lectures, and seminar competitions. Training SW professionals with Elastic Sangmyung University signed an agreement with Elastic's Korean branch in October last year. Elastic is a global leader in open-source-based real-time search and analysis, and it provides a variety of big data contents based on its excellent technology, high performance, and convenience of development. It is known that Elastic is currently using solutions from startups such as △ Microsoft△ Uber△NETFLIX△POSCO to the 2,000 largest global companies. Through this agreement, the agency decided to establish a cooperative system and cooperate on △ human resources exchange △ human resources exchange △ academic, technical, information exchange and sharing △ joint projects and programs △ research △ education and mentoring. Based on this cooperation, the two organizations are making efforts to train SW experts, and I will introduce one of the programs, "Elastic Engineer Training." The program, which started in February and ended in August, was scheduled to select and educate about 30 people at the time of the plan, but more than 100 people gathered. Recently, many SW talents are needed enough to be called the "developer boom," and many people have jumped into SW education through this program. Elastic Stack basic training and Elastic Machine Learning were conducted online and offline. The training was completed by 59 out of 91 participants, and 21 out of 59 graduates were selected to conduct a team project in which Elastic officials participated as team mentors. Students who participated in the project selected various topics related to social tasks, such as integrated information on parks and sports equipment in the Seoul metropolitan area, and analyzed consumption patterns by time, age, and region using ELK Stack to provide marketing strategies. In addition, the "Mentoring Day" of Elastic engineer training was held to provide consultations and advice on what students would notice and prepare to become future engineers with Elastic's strategic partners. While software is becoming important, it is actually difficult for non-professionals to use it. We will now be able to use this easily because the school has a system for non-professional students to receive education. I hope that students will have a chance to develop convergence capabilities and think more about their careers.

Ontact is a newly coined* word since the post* Corona era, which is a combination of “untact” (non-face-to-face contact) and “on”, which means connection with the world online. Easily speaking, ontact is a newly made concept that people can participate in events online. Do you know the fact that Sangmyung Museum has been holding an ontact exhibition since July 12? Since COVID-19 is becoming an even more severe problem in Korea, it is hard for people to go outside and join the exhibition directly. Sangmyung Museum, therefore, provides a solution by mixing VR and an online exhibition, enabling participants to “see, understand, and make” the Korean traditional hat, “gat” and the Korean traditional box of wedding gifts, “ham”. *Coin: To invent a new word or expression, or to use one in a particular way for the first time. *Post: After or later than. LG Signature Art Gallery One good example of an ontact exhibition is the “LG Signature Art Gallery”, which is designed for all kinds of people to join art freely 24/7. This exhibition was designed by designer Eu Hyeun-Jun with the purpose of establishing a place for new inspiration for the artists, and to create a location to lead the consumers’ normal life to the world of art. This new art platform fluently combines artists, art, and visitors into one without actually going to the gallery by themselves. Everyone agrees that it is hard to spend time for cultural life like going to the museum or going to the theater and watch movies since the corona era, when the government is strongly recommending people to stay indoors as much as possible to prevent contagion* to spread. The LG Signature Art Gallery focuses on the “location”, which is considered as the most important essence* of architecture. The gallery invites online visitors to the ultimate* combination between people, place, nature, and home appliances* by using VR*. LG Signature Art Gallery *Contagion: The situation in which a disease is spread by touching someone or something. *Essence: The basic or most important idea or quality of something. *Ultimate: Most extreme or important because either the original or final, or the best or worst. *Appliance: A device, machine, or piece of equipment, especially an electrical one that is used in the house, such as a cooker or washing machine. *VR: An abbreviation for virtual reality. A set of images and sounds, produced by a computer, that seem to represent a place or a situation that a person can take part in. To See, To Understand, To Make I have already mentioned above that the main purpose of Sangmyung Museum’s Ontact Exhibition is to “see, understand, and make” gat* and ham*. It is hard for people to get the chance to touch and observe gat or ham precisely in their daily life. The Sangmyung Museum, therefore, offers a good chance for the participants of the exhibition to make a close observation of both Korean traditional goods while combining the exhibition with VR technology. An Image of Gat Not only gat and ham are available at the theme “To see”, but also china*, and woodcrafts* too. The theme “To understand” is a semi-documentary media program associating with local society, which shows a master craftsman of gat, Jung Chun-Mo’s process of making gat, and Kim Chang-Sik, also a master craftsman of china, to fluently understand easily how they are made. The last theme, “To make” was designed for the participants to directly understand, inherit and improve our traditional culture at the same time by associating a semi-documentary media program with a VR exhibition. We can either choose a course of making gat or ham or request for a DIY* kit*from the museum to make it on our own. I do understand that most of you are feeling thirst to live a cultural life again but are banned because of the pandemic. Let me ask, what comes to your mind when you hear the word “gat” and “ham”? Well, many of you might know what they are, but basically are not so interested in how to make one, or even try it. Learning the way of making gat and ham is a special event that you might experience only once in your lifetime. How about visiting the Sangmyung Museum’s website and experience such a good opportunity rather than just sighing with grief over the current situation of living a dull and culturally restricted life? Kicker: SM NEWS Prof. Chulan KwakDesigned Changdeokgung for the State Guest Protocol By Sol-Hyang Park, Reporter cookie7152@naver.com ‘Changdeokgung Palace’ is the only one UNESCO World Heritage site among the five royal palaces of the Joseon Dynasty, the most ‘Korean’ palace representing Joseon. From the small food bowl to the back of the chairs, the large and small visual elements of this place are the manifestation of national branding and cultural pride. Also, the original shape of Changdeokgung is the best preserved among the five royal palaces of the Joseon Dynasty. Background of the project In September 2018, the welcoming ceremony for Indonesian foreign leaders was held at Changdeokgung Palace. It was the first time that we chose Changdeokgung as a welcoming place for state guests - we used to welcome them at the Blue House’s Grand Garden. It was a social event that the Indonesian president and his wife visited, and they had private talks with private sobans(Korean smallportablediningtable) over cushions at ChangdeokgungYeonghwadang. However, some of the foreign VIPs who were familiar with stand-up life had difficulty sitting down - so there has been the necessity of stand-up chairs. Changdeokgung Palace Management Center suggested a project to Professor Kwak Chulan of the Department of Arts at Sangmyung University – the project of new furniture for state guests such as foreign leaders. They suggested a furniture project that is suitable for stand-up life with our own traditional culture, and Professor Kwakparticipated as a senior researcher for the project. What the Management Center emphasized was ; the design of Changdeokgung Palace, a shape that can embrace various body types, and supplementing the irregular smoothness of old wooden floors. For this project, he visited ChangdeokgungYeonghwadang, the venue for state protocol, to understand the site and conduct actual inspections. He reviewed related data and examined the design of the dragon statues in the palace hall. He established the design guide by putting the demands of the Changdeokgung Palace Management Center and the field trips together. State Guest Protocol Project for Stand-up Life Yeonghwadang was where Gwageo(the highest-level state examination to recruit ranking officials)was held, and where kings and servants held banquets and shot bows in the Joseon Dynasty. From Yeonghwadang, you can see a pond called Buyongji. Buyongji is a pond built based on the idea of the “Cheonwon jibang” which means the ancient oriental space view that "The sky is round and the ground is square." Reflecting this idea, ancestors built a round island in a square pond and planted large pine trees in it. It implies that if the pond is land, the island is the sky. To reflect this characteristic, the Professor set the Cheonwon jibang idea as the basic concept of design. They placed four chairs to face the center, private tea tables on the right side of them, and a round table in the center. Therefore, it allows four people to sit around, so that no one would be excluded from the conversation during the state protocol. The round table in the center was made of a disk with 12-legged plate legs and finished with Juchil(a traditional painting method that produces red color using a type of paint called “Ju”) and heukchil(a traditional painting method that produces black color putting iron oxide in the lacquer). They designed it in the form of “Duriban (a Korean traditional round dining table)”, reinterpreting the Korean Empire royal disk in a modern concise form. Along with this, they let the flower decorations not to block the view. In the case of chairs, they applied a wide triangular board considering the various state guests' body types, and designed with three legs due to the irregular smoothness of the wooden floor. According to the Professor, with only four legs, there was a floating leg and the chair shook. However, with three legs, all the legs reached the ground. The backrest is fixed to increase the comfort of seating, and he said it is a good chair to maintain a proper upright posture rather than leaning very loosely. In addition, they chose a relatively low 350mm board for chairs not to block the view ofBuyongji. Thus, even if VIPs from foreign countries do not experience a sedentary culture, they would feel the sentiment of our ancestors leaning on the railing and enjoying the scenery. In the case of the private tea table, it reflects the traditional soban (Korean smallportablediningtable) form and it was also designed with three legs to implement the smoothness of the floor. Moreover, to design each tea table for each of the guests implies the Korean culture of separate tables. Designers, including the Professor, finally designed stand-up chairs(main, additional, for interpreter),personal tea tables and round tables for the project. The overall height of the furniture was set low not to undermine the traditional landscape appreciation culture. Above all, designers intended furniture that reflects traditional Korean culture and has a royal class, at the same time, not to directly reveal the royal family of Joseon. The artists who participated in the design, production, and lacquer process of all furniture were mostly young artists who spent more time reinterpreting tradition in a modern way than working on tradition itself. The Professor said that the project was possible thanks to these artists’ perfection and expertise in traditional technology with a modern touch. Unfortunately, due to the coronavirus, the furniture has never actually been used in state events. About this, the Professor said that although the project started with consideration for foreign guests who are not familiar with sedentary culture, it would be used for various events in Changdeokgung Palace besides state protocol. He also said that they newly designed additional chairs considering people gathering up to eight. The project was introduced to Naver Design Press. Those who watched the project gave lots of favorable reviews like, "I've never seen a chair with three legs, the design that improved the shortcomings of sitting and captured our culture was impressive, I can feel the atmosphere of Changdeokgung by noble colors and sculptures," etc. Like Professor Kwak who successfully led the project, I hope that more Sangmyung people will show off their talents in a variety of ways so that we can see many of them in the media. Let me introduce to all of you readers about events ongoing in ‘SMU recruitment Centre’ during springtime. There are three of them currently underway, which are ‘2021 SM Special Forces’, ‘2021 SM Re-Spec-TFT’, ‘Biology‧Pharmaceutical Market Job Training.’ All of these programs are tailored specifically for our school students to help their successful employment, so let’s dive in deeper to find out its details. If You Want Working at Public Enterprise, ‘2021 SM Special Forces’ Has Your Back First program to introduce is ‘2021 SM Special Forces.’ Starting from April 6th, this program is targeted to students who thinks public enterprise as their future career. The program includes one-on-one consultation about specific field or company each student is interested in, and an evaluation whether student can actually be employed at public enterprise. Unlike other employment-related programs which end up with just basic education, 2021 SM Special Forces focuses on actual success in employment. All of students have a chance of completing three application form while maintaining quality. An impressive seventeen out of twenty-one students passed their career paper examination last year, and seven of them succeeded getting a job at public enterprise. ‘2021 SM Special Forces’ is running until June 2nd. Employment Support Program Tailored for the One and Only You Second program from our school’s SMU Recruitment Centre is ‘SM Re-Spec-TFT.’ This is a program which experienced professionals who worked at actual business give advice to selected graduates and 4th-grade undergraduate. Based on data accumulated within several years, students can get job-specific consultation followed by their choice of desired job. They can also learn about analysing corporations and what license is required to earn a specific job. A student who attended last year’s SM Re-Spec-TFT said “while preparing employment alone was difficult to decide directions, attending this program helped me greatly carefully consider the course that was best suited for me.” Interested in Biology or Pharmaceuticals? This is Your Program < Specific details about Biology‧Pharmaceutical Market Job Training > Last program running in SMU Recruitment Centre is ‘Biology‧Pharmaceutical Market Job Training’, which is held from April 16th to June 11th. This program is held in association with Ewha Women’s University and Sookmyung Women’s University. Trainees can learn about marketing strategy in pharmaceutical / medical treatment / medicine industry, and also get a chance of education that teaches about actual communication with medical professionals. Biology‧Pharmaceutical Market Job Training is a total eight-week program, while trainees have to enroll every Friday from 1 PM to 6 PM.
