These works were the result of the first semester classes. These works can be appreciated on the list - the Outstanding Task Exhibition on Sangmyung University’s animation major website. According to the department's educational goal, it trains video graphics experts who deal with animation technology based on artistic expression and software realization skills. Specifically, the educational goal is to foster animation experts with a global perspective and vision by focusing on the main track areas of Concept Art, Cinematic directing, character animation, and CGI VFX*. * CGI(computer-generated imagery) VFX(Visual Effect) In this regard, students learned major classes such as ‘Interactive CGI (Unreal Engine Animation),’ ‘Content Planning and Narrative Direction,’ and on that basis, the exhibited works were created using programs such as ‘Unreal Engine,’ ‘Unity 3D Engine,’ ‘Blender,’ and ‘Maya.’ Representatively, works that emphasize their characteristics on various subjects, such as modeling game characters or producing contents like animation, are on display. Also what do you think of such changes of life? It has been difficult to live normal life for last two years due to the Covid-19 virus, but as social distancing has eased and restrictions have disappeared, you may be feeling the appreciation of ordinary life. Therefore Sangmyung University held some events to celebrate daily recovery. Most of the events can be participated by students and people related to Sangmyung University. The events were mainly held between April 22 and May 11. The event seemed useful to many students was a student cafeteria discount. Although it was limited to 500 people on the day, it was not difficult to attend. And as the student cafeteria could be reopened after Covid-19, also an event was held to discount Americano after meals at the student cafeteria. Actually, I used the student cafeteria at this opportunity, and I checked some reactions of my colleague(affiliated Sports Health Care major), and they said students who have not usually used the student cafeteria could take this opportunity, and it was good to participate in a various events for students. In addition they said they could feel that their daily life was returning little by little. Also there was book sharing event and healing concert held at the Academic Information Center. The book sharing event was an event to distribute books in social sciences such as humanities and literature among donated books that students need to the Academic Information Center and books. Many students could participate and choose two books each. In addition the healing concert was held at the rooftop garden of the Academic Information Center, where many students could have a leisurely time. Thus many students were able to participate as different events held with in-school cafes and outside. As various events were held, we could feel that our daily lives were returning. I think there should be more opportunities for many people to gather and participate and enjoy together in the future. In fact, because it is changing like that, more events will be held in the future, and we hope that the situation like before Covid-19 will resume in the future when complete daily life will be restored. Kicker: SM NEWS (ANNIVERSARY) Spaces in School Where We Can Find the History of Sangmyung University Celebrating the 85th Anniversary of Sangmyung University By Seo-Won Hong, Reporter eunoia1025@naver.com May 17, 2022 was the 85th anniversary of Sangmyung Academy and the 57th anniversary of the founding of Sangmyung University. Last 10 issue of SM News, I visited the Sangmyung University Museum where we can learn about the history of Sangmyung. In this issue to celebrate this 85th anniversary, I will introduce the space in Sangmyung University where we can find the history of Sangmyung. In Sangmyung 2 Campus (Cheonan), the Administration Building is located in the center of campus. The College of Engineering is located in the Administration Building. Freshmen attend required Computer classes in the Administration Building so students are used to this building. The lobby, first floor of the building Administration Building, we can find the history of Sangmyung. The lobby of the Administration Building is like a miniature Sangmyung University Museum. The lobby of the Administration Building (All pictures below are taken by me) On the wall of lobby, we can find the history of Sangmyung, education principles which include education purpose and education goals, management purpose & strategy, and campus info. On the other wall of lobby, a short of biography of Dr. Bae Sang-myung is displayed. The display includes Dr. Bae Sang-myung’s theory of education which is called “the theory of wheel education.” We can also see Dr. Bae Sang-myung’s items. We can see the history of the symbol, past school newspapers and materials donated by seniors, so we can see school life in the past. The Gyedang Memorial Hall (SangMyung University Museum) There is the Gyedang Memorial Hall in Sangmyung Seoul Campus. Gyedang Memorial Hall is located on the heights of the Sangmyung Seoul Campus.The Gyedang Memorial Hall was established to commemorate the achievements of Dr. Bae Sang-myung and to inherit the educational news of the teacher who devoted her life to saving education. This memorial hall preserves the building used by Gyedang as an official residence, and displays various paintings, ceramics, folk crafts, which were collected throughout her life, and cultural assets donated by Soyeon Bang Jung-bok. This memorial hall serves as another museum at Sangmyung University. The Gyedang Bae Sang-myung Memorial Hall consists of three exhibition rooms where you can see the life of Dr. Bae Sang-myung, the development history of Sangmyung Academy. Furthermore, there are the teacher's office space reproduced through video media, and various school history materials. On May 16th, the ceremony was held at Daeshin Hall of the Sangmyung Seoul Campus to celebrate the 85th anniversary of the establishment of the academy. The ceremony was held with more than 300 people, including Chairman Kang Tae-beom and President Hong Sung-tae, as well as faculty and students. Chairman Kang Tae-beom said in his speech, “Let’s move forward together with a community spirit that does our best in our respective positions so that Sangmyung Academy can become a prestigious global private school and make a new leap.” The president Hong Seong-tae said in a speech, “For the past 85 years, Sangmyung has been training talented people who have been the driving force behind Korea’s growth and they have shown their capabilities in various fields of society.” The president said, moreover, “We look forward to the 100th anniversary of Sangmyung University which is Korea’s pride and brand name in the world with the past trajectory and our efforts and passion in the future.” Meanwhile, events with students are being held throughout the campus to celebrate the 85th anniversary of Sangmyung such as a concert hosted by the Department of Music was held on May 13th. Under the motto of a university that communicates with students, it expressed each field and direction of Sangmyung University as a game character, making it easier and more fun to access website users. Also, it has drawn attention from many people on the internet. On April 18th, a new website of Sangmyung University was released to continue the attention. A new home page using games The theme of the new homepage is games. This game was made using our university mascot, SMOONG. Also, it consists of three games in total. Among them, the first game to be released is introducing and exploring the university, which will be carried out in three stages. The first stage of the game is process of completing missions. We look around various colleges, departments, and major facilities on the campuses of Seoul and Cheonan. Through this process, you can know the appearance of the campus and experience the university in advance. The second stage is to put together puzzles related to our university. The third stage is to collect grades falling from the sky. After completing all of these stages, you can receive a certificate of completion in the name of the mascot SMOONG. By Yun-Seo Jung, Cub-Reporter yysj1230@naver.com “From the 9th week of Wednesday, April 27th, the class method was switched from confluence class to in person class.” This was the most talked-about topic among students recently. The school notified that they will switch to all convergence classes when the announcement of the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters or 5% of all members are confirmed, and online classes when the announcement of the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters or 10% of all members are confirmed. As face-to-face classes have been converted, face-to-face tests have become a principle. And refrain from talking during class and you must wear a mask. There were various opinions of students about face-to-face classes in the student community. According to the opinions of students in favor of in person classes, online classes are difficult to concentrate and have limitations understanding the classes. Opponents said that it is too early to take all face-to-face classes in a situation that confirmed cases continue to occur, and it is enough to do so after this semester. Also there was an opinion to expand the shuttle bus run in case of all face-to-face classes. For smooth shuttle bus operation, the Student Council is collecting opinions from students. And as the teaching method changed, students were very interested in the upcoming school events. The biggest recent school event was the spring festival called MOLA - MOLA held at the Cheonan campus. It was held for 2 days from May 9th to May 10th, with various events - including college booths, busking, food trucks, and movie screenings. It ended successfully with the enthusiastic participation of students. With active school life, such as festivals and busking, and students, the campus has come to life as it used to be. If that’s the case, “Peerorum” would be the best answer. “Peerorum” is a one and only extracurricular program unique to our university. As the name suggests, it refers to various programs (such as SM-URP, Sangmyung Tutoring, etc.) that you can do with your peers and make a new leap forward. Shall we figure out together the basic concept of “Peerorum” and what kind of benefits we can gain from it? What is Orum Education and Peerorum? Peerorum basically belongs to Orum education. Orum Education is an education brand of Sangmyung University that develops self-confidence and competency to achieve high dreams. And it consists of three courses:Nabiorum (major curriculum), which is a predictable future education like Navigation, Naraorum (liberal education curriculum), which is an education with a strong foundation based on SM-IN core competency, and Peerorum (extracurricular curriculum), an education that grows with peers. In short, ‘Peerorum’ basically refers to the extracurricular program which is a program-type curriculum that does not grant credits other than major and liberal arts courses, and refers to planned and systematic activities to achieve the educational goals of the university. Its ultimate educational goal is to pursue global citizenship education to practice cooperation and service in preparation for participating in the future society. smu.ac.kr Configuration of Peer Oreum Map Our school is promoting the extracurricular program to students through the ‘Peerorum Map’. The Peerorum Map systematizes the extracurricular programs in the school into 6 areas (learning, language, psychology, career, employment, and start-up) and 43 organized categories. How to apply for the Peerorum? There are two ways to apply for the extracurricular program. The first method is to utilize the integrated information system. Log in to the Saemmul portal system, enter the integrated information system, and click ‘Extracurricular subjects' in the student's main menu to apply for program participation. The second method is to click Apply on the 'Peerorum' webpage. After logging in to the Saemmul portal system, click More (+) for extracurricular programs, and then click the Apply button for a program on the Peerorum web page. Kicker : SM NEWS (DiSAF) SMU Cultural Complex : The First-ever DiSAF SMU Introduces New Platform Do-Hyuk Kim, Reporter ndapple0921@gmail.com Ever-expanding COVID-19 is still with us after two years from its first introduction to the world, making showcasing and savoring art to be much difficult than ever before. The only way to consume art for now is to look up online, or in spaces formed in augmented reality. SMU has always tried their best to provide high quality digital contents, so SMU had to have a blue-sky thinking of forming new place for SMU students to share their artworks and ones who want to enjoy them. What SMU came up with is a ‘DiSAF’, the first of its kind. DiSAF is an entirely new platform for everyone to take a closer look at SMU’s various artists, gathering sixteen culture and art-related departments of SMU in one place. Let me introduce you to the freshly unveiled DiSAF. DiSAF selected its own first topic as ‘Beyond the paradox of connectedness.’ Since this is a hard time withstanding COVID-19, the committee of DiSAF chose the topic which would best represent what students of SMU experienced and artists of SMU would be most likely to depict. Humans consistently cooperate and disintegrate during their interaction, but unexpected appearance of social distancing made connection between individuals riskier than ever. DiSAF rose up from the ground to become a solution, and so it did terrifically. DiSAF embodies hundreds of productions in one single place via online, while collecting four-hundred students of SMU to the uncharted, billions of inhabitants on the internet. To help these tons of anticipated spectators, DiSAF features several kinds of assistance for people who visit the DiSAF page. Each work of art has got a hashtag for classification from eighty-four topics, which include something broad like ‘Design’, ‘Entertainment’, ‘Living’, ‘Craftwork’ to rather unique ‘Photo Journalism’, ‘Sensitivity’, ‘Fabric.’ If visitor clicks each hashtag, related productions can be appreciated without any further actions. This means DiSAF was carefully considered from its development phase and anyone who visit can take a look without a single hassle. I was especially drawn to the hashtag ‘Modern’, since it was the theme which included the second biggest number of artworks and was the topic I was deeply interested in. Hashtag ‘modern’ embodies several different forms of art, ranging from paintwork to forever-unseen unique kind of dance. There are much more interesting artworks designated to different hashtags too, so checking it out would be a brilliant idea. Another way to enjoy DiSAF is to use the ‘Slide-Show’ feature prepared for ease of its use. This cool feature shows the best of the best within hundreds of brilliant works done by SMU students, so picking up great art while time is rushing out has never been so easy. As mentioned earlier before, a total of sixteen art-related majors took part in DiSAF. You can also organize these artworks by major which contributed to producing these various pieces of art. Any expectation you can throw on the online art consuming platform, DiSAF is already prepared from its launch and has got you covered. DiSAF made its hot debut from February 7th, and it was definitely a flying start. The head of the DiSAF organizing committee, the President of SMU Sung-Tae Hong proudly represented DiSAF announcing, “SMU has always committed to be focused on students and education, targeting to raise a talented masters of future society. DiSAF shows how students of SMU endlessly experimented, built and improved their artistic experiences by these wide selections of artworks. I hope to give compliments to SMU and SMU’s students making a bold new step and our future.” Indeed, the launch of DiSAF made a great opportunity for both SMU students and further spectators. Kicker: SM NEWS (Promotion) Sangmyung University Promotional Videos All Departments Made By Seo-Won Hong, Reporter eunoia1025@naver.com Due to the prolonged COVID-19, it has become difficult to consult with freshmen and transfer students who entered our university face-to-face. Accordingly, students from all departments of Sangmyung University produced a department promotion video for freshmen and transfer students. The department promotion video is perfect information for the untact era, which can provide indirect experiences in college life to freshmen and transfer students. The department promotion video features students from each department to provide specific information about the department. Through this article, I’m going to introduce the department promotion videos that will help freshmen and transfer students with school life. The Department Promotion Video Produced by Enrolled Students, Professors, and Graduates A total of 74 department promotional videos were created with 66 department promotional videos and 8 department promotional videos produced by ambassadors. The department promotion video is meaningful in that enrolled students, professors, and graduates participated in cooperation for freshmen and transfer students who have difficulty to obtain information in non-face-to-face situations. The department promotion videos contain various contents such as department introduction, department curriculum, various club activities in the department, interviews with professors and students, and department prospects. The department promotion videos can be checked on Sangmyung University's official YouTube admission website. Awards for Producing Department Promotion Videos The Department of Historical Contents, which won the 1st prize, produced a video introducing the department and college life with the participation of students and professors, including quizzes conducted with a prize of 1 million won.The Department of Economics and Finance and the Department of Russian Language and Regional Studies Major won the 2nd prize. The Department of Economics and Finance introduced college life such as introduction to departments, atmosphere of departments, and tips for making friends. The Department of Russian Language and Regional Studies Major produced a department promotion video containing interviews with graduates working at Hyundai Motor's Russian subsidiary partner and graduates who entered the Russian National University. In addition, 10 departments won the 3rd prize. There are 10 Departments such as Family Welfare, Education, Game, Fintech, Dance Art, Korean Language and Culture, Space Design Major, Stage Art, Sports Convergence and Software. Lastly, the Department of Nursing Science made a promotion video which is a parody of Squid Game. Effects of Department Promotion Videos A university official said, “With the spread of COVID-19, the promotion video of the department, which the entire department participated in, shows an amateur appearance in the video as it was produced by the enrolled students. However, the information delivered by students is expected to allow freshmen and transfer students to experience practical college life indirectly.” The department promotion videos contain useful information for students who are new to school for the first time, so I hope many students will pay attention. In addition to department promotional videos, Sangmyung University blogs, Facebook and Instagram can also provide various information about school life, so I hope students will be interested in using these resources. Many students get interested in them, and adore them – the cats are even nicknamed “sang-nyang-I.” However, do you know that theres is a great danger lurking around them? It is a “CAR.” Cats Dying from Cars Every year, many animals die from vehicles. Over the past three years from 2018 to 2021, the number of road kills (based on carcasses) in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do reached 87,581. The number of road kills is increasing every year in both Seoul and Gyeonggi-do, of which cats accounted for the highest portion (73% in Seoul and 65% in Gyeonggi) - Seven out of 10 roadkills in downtown Seoul are cats. This danger also exists within Sangmyung University. Currently, about 20 cats live on Seoul Campus, and one of them had a hit-and-run accident inNovember last year. Fortunately, thanks to “Sangnyangheng,” several cats were able to get necessary surgeries and treatments. Sangnyangheng is a Sangmyung University Seoul Campus club that opened in October last year. Through an interview with Sangnyangheng, we could hear some stories about related safety issues, including the accident and their activities. The interview was conducted in writing with Sangyangheng members. Interview with Sangnyangheng 1. Please introduce Sangnyangheng. Hello! We are Sangnyangheng : Companion for Coexistence with Sangmyung (University) Cats. We are doing various activities for the coexistence of each ecosystem subject within Sangmyung ecosystem including street cats (referred to as “Sang Yang-I”), faculty students & staffs campus members, nearby merchants, and residents. 2. A cat "Yobi" had a hit-and-run accident at school in November last year. I wonder how you found Yobi and took care of it. On November 22th, 2021, we got a report that a street cat was hit by a car at Sangmyung University Seoul Campus. We rushed to the spot and immediately transferred Yobi to the hospital, but it was diagnosed with paraplegia in the hind legs due to spinal fractures and nerve damage. Yobi had a surgery to connect the broken spinal pieces.We decided on surgery and care, and Yobi had a major surgery to connect the broken spinal pieces. However, since the paralysis was caused by nerve damage, Yobi still has a lower body paralysis even after the surgery. Therefore, after being discharged from the hospital, Yobi is now staying in a temporary shelter in loving care from members with rehabilitation treatment for nerve regeneration. Yobi is now staying in a temporary shelter in loving care. 5. I wonder how Sangnyangheng will cope with these safety issues or how you are currently coping with them. We think that we can prevent the death and injury of animals caused by cars by everyone's efforts. Last year, we held a "car bonnet morning knock campaign" to wake cats resting under parked cars before driving. This year, we are planning a "Vehicle slow-down campaign on campus" to make a safe campus for both animals and humans. In addition, we will post contents to provide information about roadkill and improve awareness of it. 6. What are some ways we can do to prevent such accidents? Please make bonnet knocks, slowing down safely, and keeping eyes on the road a part of your life - when you drive cars, motorcycles, and bicycles on campus and in residential areas. These few easy actions can prevent unnecessary sacrifices of street cats who are members of the urban ecosystem. Above all, these actions will protect the safety of both animals and people living together in the city. 7. What are your future plans and goals? The most immediate goal ahead of us is to help Yobi stay healthy and enjoy life in the temporary shelter and eventually find a family that will be with it forever. Moreover, as we said earlier, we will continue to do our job to prevent such accidents and protect the safety of the SangYang-Is. Besides, we are planning various activities such as fun events, goods sales, TNR(Trap-Neuter-Reurn), and creating visual campaigns, so please stay tuned! Ultimately, our biggest goal and plan is to create a friendly (being ‘sangnyang’) campus where all living things can coexist healthily and peacefully. 8. Lastly, if there is anything you want to say to readers, please. A funding project <요비야, 함께걷자> for the lower paraplegic cat Yobi is ongoing on the Tumblbug site. We planned the project and produced goods for Yobi by ourselves, so please give us a lot of attention and support. We believe that preventing street cat accidents on campus is the job of all Sangmyung University members. University is not only a place for learning about each other’s major, but also a place that can fulfill students’ urge to know more about themselves and get chances to fill in things that they are short of. *Extracurricular: Not part of the usual school or college course. The motto of Sangmyung’s education is to cultivate* talented people to contribute to culture creation and human welfare. Sangmyung emphasizes five important points in extracurricular programs: Creative, ethical, synthesizing, respectful, and disciplinary mind. Through these aspects, Sangmyung pinpoints into three strategies of concentrating on every single student, expanding the range of extracurricular programs linking with the subjects, and advancing the programs. *Cultivate: to try to develop and improve something. *Disciplinary: Connected with the punishment of people who break the rules. Sangmyung offers systemized programs that do not offer credits and that achieve the motto of the school. Educational gathering, educational education, educational competition, educational consulting, and educational category test are five types of extracurricular programs. As a student who has experienced educational gathering, English speaking tutoring, before Corona, I got the feeling that it was very helpful of enhancing my fluency in English. When we are attending classes, it is hard to get a chance to speak and share ideas in English even though my major is English. However, English speaking tutoring helped me to use English with less pressure. Sharing ideas of social issues in English was both interesting and helpful. It is true that many students do not usually care much about programs that schools launch, possibly thinking that it is not related to them. Therefore, it would be my pleasure to give helpful information for students to enhance their further participation.
