Kicker: SM NEWS (EVENT) Department of Industrial Design Participated in the ETRI Intelligent Convergence Research Laboratory Project as a Capstone Design By Seo-Won Hong, Reporter eunoia1025@naver.com The Department of Industrial Design at Sangmyung University became a best practice by applying the project, which is being carried out as a technology development project in the industrial field with the ETRI Intelligent Convergence Research Laboratory, to the class of "UX Design", a capstone design subject. Based on the major knowledge of Sangmyung University's Department of Industrial Design, the UX Design course is designed and produced by students themselves. The UX design course is a comprehensive design course to cultivate creativity, practical skills, teamwork, and leadership. The UX design course is conducted by industry consulting on the operation of the subject. In this article, I will introduce the Capstone design course (UX Design course) of the Department of Industrial Design at Sangmyung University. Also, in this article, I would like to introduce the Department of Industrial Design at Sangmyung University. UX design refers to designing various applications contained in the web, smartphones, etc. to be more convenient to use. Through this, the Department of Industrial Design at Sangmyung University conducted a class of "UX Design", an industry-academic-linked project class, so that students can participate in the development process of the "Life Safety K-Guard App" being developed by ETRI. The class performance result of "UX Design", a capstone design subject, was reflected in the "Life Safety K-Guard App Advancement Course" and became an exemplary example of the operation of the capstone design subject. Life Safety K-Guard App Developed by ETRI ETRI has developed an app that informs various risk information in daily life, such as flooding, fire, and disappearance, for people to live in safety. ETRI, along with LH Land and Housing Research Institute and Daegu Metropolitan City, said it would demonstrate life safety services that inform and prevent safety risks in daily life for three months from August for Seo-gu and Indongchon 100-year villages in Daegu. K-Guard, a life safety risk prevention service app developed by ETRI, provides 11 types of services such as flooding risk, fire risk, daily safety, sole safety, and missing accidents according to regional characteristics. In particular, this service is customized for users and provides various safety risks in daily life according to individual safety vulnerabilities such as user's location, age, and disability. Developed by ETRI, the Life Safety K-Guard app provides alerts of higher risk levels for visually impaired, crutches/wheelchair users, pregnant women and the elderly with high safety vulnerabilities, even at the same risk. In addition, apps developed by ETRI provide automatic notifications near dangerous points by voice, vibration, and text depending on your choice without running the app one by one, so you can pay attention to safety risks from time to time. The life safety K-guard app developed by ETRI is a service that contributes to community safety by informing the risk of exposure to various parts of the neighborhood through voluntary participation such as active reporting and reporting by users. As a result, it is possible to prevent safety accidents by receiving notifications when visually impaired, elderly, or nearby pedestrians pass the area and bypassing them with caution. Kim Hyung-joon, director of the ETRI Intelligent Convergence Research Laboratory, said, “Citizen-participating activities have been greatly activated due to the development of ICT, and various disaster and safety data of government, local governments, and public institutions have been interlinked through a standard-based service structure.” In addition, he said, “Through this, it is meaningful to provide a foundation technology that can create a safety community on its own with civic participation in safety around daily life, going beyond government-led disaster response national safety services.” To summarize, ETRI has developed the “Life Safety K-Guard App,” a public app service that utilizes public data and crowdsourcing held by the government, public institutions, and local governments, by providing customized information and alerts on safety risks in daily life using smartphones. In addition, UX design considers making it more convenient to use various applications on the web and smartphones, and students majoring in industrial design at Sangmyung University participated in the development course of the UX design of "Life Safety K-Guard App" developed by ETRI. Department of Industrial Design at Sangmyung University’s Capstone Design course, “UX Design” The Department of Industrial Design at Sangmyung University and the ETRI Intelligent Convergence Research Laboratory signed a business agreement for the joint operation of the Capstone Design subject, “UX Design”. Through this, the detailed technology, development process, and app accessibility knowledge of the Life Safety K-Guard App being developed by ETRI were shared with the students in the UX Design curriculum, and the students participated in the Life Safety K-Guard App usage review and UX/UI plan development process. Jung Soo-yeon, 4th grade at Sangmyung University’s Department of Space Design, and Han So-won, 3rd grade at Sangmyung University’s Department of Space Design, participated as the first and second authors in the paper “Development of a Solar Tracking-Based Movable Louver System to Save Lighting Energy and Create a Compatible Light Environment” published in SCIE International Academic Journal, Building. Sangmyung University’s Department of Space Design was the first indoor design major in Korea in 1988 and is a proud department of Sangmyung University. In this article, I will take a closer look at the SCIE International Academic Journal of the undergraduate research team majoring in space design at Sangmyung University. Also, I will learn more about Sangmyung University's space design major. SCIE stands for SCIENCE CITATION INDEX EXPANDED. The SCIE paper is an overseas journal with high technical value, meaning “Science and Technology Paper Index,” and can be said to be an extension of the renowned journal SCI selected by strict selection criteria among scientific and technology journals. The difference between SCIE and SCI is that SCIE was later created by adding “expanded”' to SCI, but it has been integrated since 2020 and now SCIE and SCIE are the same. Summary of the paper “Development of a Solar Tracking-Based Movable Louver System to Save Lighting Energy and Create a Compatible Light Environment” published in an international academic journal If you look at the summary of the paper 'Development of a Solar Tracking-Based Movable Louver System to Save Lighting Energy and Create a Compatible Light Environment' published in an international academic journal, the paper shows that the research team of undergraduates majoring in space design at Sangmyung University proposed a solar tracking-based mobile louver (STML) system and investigated its efficacy using a full-scale test bed. In addition, the paper contains the contents of developing a full-scale test bed for this purpose. The paper states that the research team of undergraduates majoring in space design at Sangmyung University has estimated indoor uniformity improvement and energy reduction of various types of STML systems, including vertical, horizontal, eggcrate and hybrid. In other words, the louver (shade) system proposed in this research paper is a mixed type louver (shade) in which four driveshafts control the length sequentially from the driveshaft adjacent to the sun through solar tracking to increase the area of the sun screen. Through this, the problem of damaging the view right was improved along with improving the shading and lighting efficiency of the louver (shade film) compared to the prior technology. In particular, performance evaluation proved that energy reduction of 35.7% to 49.7% compared to prior technologies is possible. In the paper, this study states that this study is significant because it proposes a new louver concept that can improve shading and daylighting efficiency by reviewing conventional louver technologies and validating their effectiveness through performance evaluation. However, another limitation of this study is stated in the paper that there is a lack of technical review to assess the economics of the proposed technology, and further research will improve the limitations of this study. This indicates that the research team of undergraduates majoring in space design at Sangmyung University recognizes the limitations of their paper and is working to improve them. As a result, it can be seen that Sangmyung University’s Department of Space Design is constantly facing limitations and striving to move in a better direction. It increases concentration. 3. It increases the effectiveness of exercise. 4. It calms your mind. For these reasons, music is closely related to the lives of modern people. In that sense, let's find out what kind of music clubs are in the Sangmyung University Cheonan campus. Do you know what kind of music clubs are at Sangmyung University? There are three music clubs at Sangmyung University: Soulo, Darkness, and Crunk Brain. Characteristics of Each Club The first music club is the acoustic music club Soulo. Soulo consists of a performance team, a planning team, a public relation team, and a technical team. Soulo’s advantage is to perform in contact with other cafes and bars. And during regular performances, they perform with a concept. For example, last year, they held a retro concept and performed songs related to autumn, such as IU's autumn morning. Soulo runs a channel on YouTube so that more people can listen to their songs. The second music club is Darkness. Darkness is a rock band club that has been active for over 20 years. Darkness consists of vocals, guitar, bass, drums, keyboards, etc. The strength of Darkness lies in the long experience and popularity of the band club, and due to the nature of the band club, it focuses on rock music and performance. In addition, Darkness performed about 30 songs in collaboration with the Chungnam Music Creation Center during its regular performance last year. The third music club is Crunk Brain, a black music club. Crunk Brain consists of a performance team, a content production team, and a supporters team. The advantage of Crunk Brain is that people who like black music gather to write and compose various music. In addition, Crunk Brain holds regular performances every semester and participate in joint performances with universities based in Cheonan. Lastly, Crunk Brain is the only rap club at Sangmyung University and has the peculiarity of performing only with the lyrics written by the members. According to an interview with Cho Ji-hoon, a student of the Department of Plant Food Engineering who has seen all the club performances, “I believe Soulo is a club where you can listen comfortably. This project is a cultural independent content created by Cheonan citizens themselves, and it is a project to develop contents that combine the two by utilizing Cheonan's cultural resources. The team ‘Gongbaek’ recreated the Standing Stone Buddha statue of Jangsan-ri Cheonan, a local cultural property, a trouble solving whiz* ‘Kopakdosa.’ And, they made various culture contents by utilizing this character. Then, what is the association between the Standing Stone Buddha statue of Jangsan-ri and ‘Kopakdosa?’ * whiz : a person who is good at something What Is the Standing Stone Buddha Statue of Jangsan-ri? Standing Stone Buddha statue in Jangsan-ri In order to understand their connection, it is necessary to learn about the Standing Stone Buddha statue in Jangsan-ri. It is located in the village of Jangsan-ri, Dongnam-gu, Cheonan, and is a standing Buddha statue made of granite on a square pedestal. The head with a topknot hair is larger than the body and narrow shoulders. His comfortable face is full of mercy, and his nose was damaged by shamanistic customs. Therefore, they implemented various content development projects by developing a character called ‘Kopakdosa,’ which emphasized the symbolism of 'solution of worries' and 'nose.' They also produced an Instagramtoon through their Instagram accounts or practiced a problem-solving program using Instagram's Q&A function. It was divided into three episodes, with the story that ‘Kopakdosa,’ the representative character of the team, listens to the story of a student who is worried about getting a job and solves the problem. In our university, there are lots of mobile applications. They are important and essential. You can use these mobile applications to process attendance, assign library seats, etc. Kinds of Mobile Application at Sangmyung University There are many kinds of mobile application that can be use at our university. I will introduce 4 kinds of mobile applications. The first application is “Sangmyung University Academic Information Center”. It can be called a mobile library. Through this application, you can check if the book you want to borrow is in the library and check the status of books that you borrowed. Also, you can reserve and use group-study-rooms. The second application is “Cosmos”. This application allows you to check the notices of your lecture and information of newly uploaded assignments in real time. The third application is “StonePass”. You will have frequent access to “Sammul Portal System”. It is a kind of web site of our university. You can get almost all the information about our university from this website, including your academic information, enrollment, notices, and lecture information. Among these apps, if you want to check the information about the lecture that you signed up for, you need to authenticate yourself. “StonePass” is an app that can authenticate yourself. Without this application, you cannot check the information about lectures, so it is an indispensable application. The fourth application is “Clicker”. This application is very useful during the exam period. During the exam period, there are more students in the library, so you have to reserve seats by using “StonePass” first. Then you can use your seats. With this application, you can easily designate your seat on your phone. You can also check where the remaining seats are and where the seats are being used. Kicker: SM NEWS A Student Thesis at Sangmyung University Published in an International Journal By Su-Young Kim, Reporter kimsuyoung1342@gmail.com In December 2022, Ju-Yeong Lee’s thesis in the Department of Biochemical Engineering at Sangmyung University was published in an international journal called the International Journal of Molecular Sciences for Cover Paper. The title of the thesis is “CuO Modified by 7,7,8,8-Tetracyanoquinodimethane and Its Application to CO2 Separation”. From now on, let’s look at the thesis and find out what it is about. As the industry develops, the use of fossil fuels increases, and carbon dioxide emissions are increasing. This can affect queue balance and cause environmental problems such as ecosystem destruction. To improve this, it is important to reduce carbon dioxide emissions in the process of burning fossil fuels, and Carbon Capture technology is being used as a way. Carbon Capture technology is to extract carbon dioxide emitted from fossil fuels before discharging them into the atmosphere and then apply pressure to make them into liquids. The captured carbon dioxide is usually injected into the geological underground structure and deposited through a long lithification* process. Ju-Yeong Lee used “7,7,8,8-Tetracyanoquinodimethane” materials to modify the surface of copper oxide and increase the solubility of carbon dioxide, thereby increasing the efficiency of carbon dioxide separation membranes. This study is expected to have great academic implications in research related to Carbon Capture technology and environmental problems, which are almost the only solutions to reducing large scale CO2 occurring in industrial sites. *Lithification: Process in which sediments compact under pressure, expel connate fluids, and gradually become solid rock. You might be excited to start college and worried about your school life at the same time. I would like to introduce you to the restaurants around the school to help you decide on your lunch menu, based on the experiences and opinions of seniors. I hope it will help you a bit to have a fruitful and enjoyable school life. The restaurants I would like to introduce are as follows: Andamiro, Yungane, Budaetongryeong, FIB, and more. Let’s go see the details of these eateries! Andamiro Andamiro is located inside the school, in the M Building. It is run by Sangmyung University’s Department of Food and Nutrition and operates a restaurant and café together. It is meaningful in that students can participate in menu planning, sales, and management, and learn practical skills. Sundae Ramyeon is the most famous dish served in the restaurant and Sangmyung students also highly recommended scones among the café menus. “Andamiro’s scones are very sweet and soft, they’re really delicious,” said Subin and Chaewon, students at Sangmyung University. It also serves various kinds of menu items such as Korean foods, carb snacks and Japanese foods. Please note that ramen vending machines and multi vending machines are also located in Andamiro. Scones (Andamiro) Yungane Yungane is located in the restaurant area of the school hill. It is a basic local restaurant and sells a variety of Korean dishes or carb snacks. According to the Sangmyung students, Kimchi roe rice and rabokki are the most delicious dishes in Yungane. Gimbap (Yungane) Budaetongryeong Budaetongryeong is also located in the school hill, at the basement floor of Yungane. It sells various Korean earthen pot menus such as budae-jjigae, stir-fried spicy pork, cheese chicken ribs, kimchi-jjigae, and soft tofu-jjigae. You can enjoy food at a very low price of about 6,000 won, and rice is also available unlimitedly. It is the most cost-effective restaurant around the campus. Spicy Stir-fried Chicken (Budaetongryeoung) FIB FIB is also located on the other side of the hill. It was originally a bongousse rice burger restaurant, but it changed last year. The name of the restaurant stands for “Fire in the Bowl,” which sells barbecue foods. Barbecue rice burgers are popular as it is run by the former rice burger restaurant owner, and other rice bowls are also delicious. In addition to the four restaurants above, an instant tteokbokki restaurant named Red Stairs was also recommended by many students. Sangmyung student Yoona said that budae-jjigae of Red Stairs is very delicious. The newly opened Riddoriddo’s Mexican burrito is also considered delicious. If you want to eat Japanese food, Arigatomamma’s ramen would also be great. Among the cafes, Bluepot is on B1 of building R, and its hotdogs are famous among students. Bagels are famous in Café Dream, which is located in the Central Faculty Building (S) in front of the bus stop. This workshop is very meaningful in that it is an offline event that has been held for the first time in about three years since the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, let's dive into the scene of the vivid workshop! Sangmyung Daecheon Training Center Who Were the Participants? This workshop was held under the leadership of Director In-Chul Kim, who is the director of a newspaper and broadcasting station and a professor of intellectual property major. Assistant Sa-Rah Chae from the Seoul Campus and Assistant Professor Ji-Hoon Park from the Cheonan Campus also led the workshop. In the case of students, a total of 25 students from SMBS (Sangmyung Broadcasting System) (Seoul, Cheonan), The SM Herald (English press), Jaha School Magazine Editing Department, and Sangmyung University Newspaper participated. (Originally, there are way more members, but students who had difficulty attending the workshop due to personal reasons were inevitably unable to attend.) Each media division introduced its own media company and reported the achievements made last year (2022). At the meeting that was done after, we had time to sit together with each media company and discuss the 2023 promotion plan and expected effects. It was a meaningful time as we were able to set the direction to move forward and discuss areas for improvement. #2 Team building Right after the meeting, we moved to Daecheon Beach, which is not far from the training center. Here, we were divided by media outlets and had free time to get to know each other better. All the students had a good time taking pictures at the beach, chatting at the cafe, and eating snacks. We had so much fun that we didn't even notice that it was morning because we were talking about things we hadn't been able to tell. Interviews on Winter Workshop First of all, Professor In-Chul Kim, the director of the newspaper and broadcasting station, said "The winter workshop was different from the original plan." The original intention was to carry out the workshop with the purpose of studying together and mutual exchange. Accordingly, he tried to request an external instructor, but there were practical problems such as schedule. Therefore, if possible, the next workshop, the summer workshop, would be held with a reporter or PD to help students at the newspaper and broadcasting station learn many things through the workshop. He also said that the four media companies in the university did not seem compatible through this workshop. Furthermore, he said that when the four media companies harmonize and interact, they can help each other and create more things and that this problem should be reconsidered. Do-Hyuk Kim, the reporter from the SM Herald in this winter's workshop said, "It was a meaningful experience to attend the workshop for the first time since becoming a member of a newspaper and broadcasting station." In addition, she said that she was able to know them by listening to presentations with other media company introductions and improvements, and after listening to the presentation, it was a good time to have a meeting and think about our media company again. There are some regrets and good things about this winter workshop, which was held for the first time since COVID-19, but I think it would have been a good experience for the members. Using this workshop as a stepping stone, I hope it will become a newspaper and broadcasting station of Sangmyung University that will further develop in the future. This SM Running Fair is hosted by Sangmyung University’s SW Central University Project Group. To have the necessary problem-solving skills in the field of major, all students are required to complete the subjects of “Computing Thinking and Game Design” and “Algorism and Game Contents” in the first grade. These processes are managed by Sang Myung University’s SW Central University Project Group. What Is the Sangmyung University’s SW Central University Project Group? It was newly established to cultivate suitable talents in an era of rapid technological change and provided more advanced artificial intelligence education to students of the Department of Convergence at SMU. As mentioned earlier, all students can understand the basics of coding through an interesting process called “making a game” by taking courses such as “computing thinking and game design” and “algorism and game content.” Introduction Of the Works Let’s look at some of the works that students displayed at the SM Running Fair. There are lots of students' two types of work such as games, and programs. First, I want to introduce to you a program which is called “Apple Store”. According to explanation at SM Running Fair site, inspired by a site that allows users to choose the product they want to buy on the Internet, they created a program that allows them to purchase Apple’s devices. If you execute the code, a greeting and an article explaining Apple’s devices appear, and you can express your intention to purchase by entering the product name and number of products you want. Also, schools are engaged in various activities to foster convergent people thus I hope interested students can find the information they need.
