Creating a Play from Scratch Under the supervision of Professor Lim-Hyung-Jin from the Department of Theatre, senior students were given a chance to complete the production of the play entirely from scratch, starting from directing, playwriting, lighting, production – all the way to acting. https://www.smu.ac.kr/webzine/today.do?mode=view&articleNo=737612&article.offset=10&articleLimit=10 El folkefiende, and the Societal Implications It Holds The theme of this year's Youth Theatre Festival was "Taking a Breath with Modern and Contemporary Plays." As COVID-19 has at last subsided and normal daily activities have finally started to become more possible over time in this post-pandemic era, the festival aimed to provide a sense of "relaxation" through theatrical arts for those who had a tough time, and to metaphorically convey the message that theater arts are once again "breathing” – perhaps as a remark on breathing freely without face masks for everyone. https://www.smu.ac.kr/webzine/today.do?mode=view&articleNo=737612&article.offset=10&articleLimit=10 Meanwhile, El folkefiende (Enemy of the People) is a play written by Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen in 1882, set in a small Norwegian town in the late 19th century. The protagonist, Dr. Thomas Stockmann, discovers that the town's hot springs are polluted and insists on exposing the truth and taking social responsibility. However, the dominant figures in the town, along with the media and citizens, criticize Stockmann for making claims that go against their interests. Ultimately, Stockmann is branded as an enemy of the people and faces public condemnation in his quest to reveal the truth. Through El folkefiende, Ibsen portrays the clash of values between the majority and the minority, illustrating the resistance of the minority seeking truth against the blind majority driven by self-interest. The play highlights the importance of respecting the opinions of the minority, especially when the majority's judgment is not necessarily correct or competent. Professor Lim Hyeong-Jin, the project advisor, also stated that “El folkefiendeis a work by Ibsen that reflects a rebellious perspective on 19th-century society, encouraging serious contemplation on the contradictory relationship between power and truth commonly witnessed today between groups and individuals.” I contribute this article to commemorate the very moment in which such a socially meaningful play as El folkefiende was proudly produced by students of Sangmyung University and appreciate them for brightly showcasing our artistic eminence on the grand stage of the Korean theater scene.

Kicker: SM NEWS (EVENT) A Paper by Undergraduate Students Majoring in Cultural and Art Management was Published in an International Academic Journal Registered on KCI By Seo-Won Hong, Reporter eunoia1025@naver.com Undergraduate students at Sangmyung University’s Department of Cultural and Art Management conducted research with advisor professor Kim Hyun-su about global fandom communication platform Weverse of HYBE, and published a paper in an international academic journal registered on KCI. In this article, I will take a closer look at the paper written by undergraduate students wtih their advisor professor. Also, I will introduce more about the Department of Cultural and Art Management. Co-author of the paper (Prof. Kim Hyun-su, Undergraduate students Kim Da-Yeon and Kwak Nam-mi) (SMU) A paper “A study on Entertainment Platform Service Evaluation Using IPA (Importance-Performance Analaysis : Focusing on Weverse” written by Professor Kim Hyun-su and undergraduate students Kwak Nam-mi and Kim Da-Yeon as co-authors, was published in the Journal of the Korea Entertainment Industry Association (JKEIA) (Vol. 16, No. 7). According to the paper, after prior research, undergraduate students conducted in-depth interviews and surveyed Weverse users. The paper analyzed the importance and satisfaction of each function of platform service and diagnosed the current status and problems of Weverse. In particular, the paper presented the priority of introducing new services and suggested future directions. Kim Da-Yeon, 3rd grade majoring in Cultural and Art Management said “We had many meetings to collect and analyze data for research with our advisor professor during more than six months, so we are able to achieve good results.” Kwak Nam-mi, 4th grade majoring in Cultural Management and Art said “I would like to thank Professor Kim Hyun-su for guiding me to complete our paper, and I want to continue research in the entertainment field after graduation.” Kim Hyun-su, an advisor professor of the Department of Cultural and Art Management, said “It is uncommon for an undergraduate student majoring in arts to publish a paper in a prestigious journal.” She also said, “We were able to achieve good results because the students have much interest in the entertainment business, and they put immense efforts to solve problems arising in the entertainment business field.” Sangmyung University’s Department of Cultural and Art Management aims to produce future culture and arts CEOs, who will lead the Korean art world in the era of culture and become a center of cultivating future cultural arts planners. This is related to the '2023 University International Development Cooperation Understanding Promotion Project' supported by the Korea International Cooperation Agency, KOICA. This is a project to cultivate human resources who can participate in international development cooperation projects in the future, focusing on raising global citizenship and understanding poverty, health, economy, environment, and gender equality in the international community among university students. Sangmyung University's International Development Evaluation Center has been selected for the ninth year for the '2023 University International Development Cooperation Understanding Promotion Project' organized by KOICA. Making a Lotus Flower of the Educational Volunteer Program This educational volunteer activity, which visited overseas in person, was resumed for the first time in four years due to the influence of COVID-19. Previously, they visited countries such as Laos, Vietnam, the Philippines, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Rwanda, and Tanzania, and in 2020, they conducted an Understanding Promotion Project through online open lectures due to COVID-19. The Sangmyung University volunteer group, consisting of 10 students and 4 leaders, visited Ban Chan Nou Primary School in Luang Prabang, Laos. While there, the volunteers worked with about 60 elementary school students on hygiene education using clay soap, and provided educational services such as making a lotus flower, origami, drawing fan, and world map drawing. Then they executed group work to paint a school building. They also visited the Ecole des Beaux-Arts Luangprabang, a traditional crafts school that has been in constant contact with Sangmyung University. While there, they provided marketing support by helping to create a brochure for the school. The students who participated in this overseas volunteer work were selected from among the students of "International Development Cooperation and Technology & Design," a course offered at Sangmyung University in the first semester of the 2023 as part of the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) Understanding Promotion Project. Baek Sun-wook, head of the International Development Evaluation Center at Sangmyung University (Professor of Software Department), said, "I hope this overseas volunteer activity will help to revitalize international development cooperation projects in Laos." In addition, he said, "We plan to continue overseas volunteer activities for students in the International Development Cooperation and Technology & Design course to expand our understanding of international cooperation and global citizenship." Kicker: SM NEWS Welcome to SMU House! by Si-ho Park, Reporter pnshse05@naver.com From August 31st to September 2nd, SMU House students are entering the dormitory for the second semester of 2023. SMU House is a dormitory for the students of Sangmyung University Seoul Campus, located in Pyeongchang-dong, which opened in March 2013. I will share the dormitory information and living tips for new students of SMU House. What is SMU House? The SMU House, a student dormitory of Sangmyung University Seoul Campus in Pyeongchang-dong, provides various types of rooms such as double rooms, triple rooms, quadruple rooms, six rooms, and eight rooms. In the SMU House, there is a computer room, a restroom, a studying room, a laundry room, and a shower room. As for the selection criteria, students in the second and fourth grades are selected in the order of the total score of the average credit for the previous semester and the commuting distance. In the case of freshmen, they are selected in the order of the total score of admission and commuting distance. Tips for Living at SMU House First, you can enter or exit the dormitory entrance and each floor using the card key that you receive in the administrative office when you enter SMU House. The first basement floor of the building is the lobby, the first and second floors are used by male students, and the third and fourth floors are used by female students. The administrative office on the first basement floor keeps packages and is in charge of other administrative tasks. Second, the roll call is held from Monday to Thursday at 12 a.m. They check every single one, so please keep that in mind! You can apply for an extension to 1 o'clock. You can apply for a night out or an extension freely, but if you apply, it will be noted to your parents. Third, there are public restrooms on each floor. There is a microwave, and you can also eat while watching TV. When using the shared refrigerator, please write down the room number and your name. Fourth, there are also laundry rooms on each floor. Laundry cards can be issued and charged on B1F. Both the washing machine and the dryer can be used for 1,000 won at a time. It's good to bring your own drying rack. Lastly, there is a cleaning check twice a semester for each room, so it would be nice if you keep your room clean! Celebrating the second semester, I conducted an interview with Professor Francis Brennen of the General Education Department in order to help you with your English-related concerns. Let's take a peak at the interview! 1. Hello, it is a great honor to have an interview with you. Before we start, please introduce yourself briefly! Hello. My name is Francis Brannen and I’ve been working at Sangmyung University for over ten years under the Department of General Education. 2. I know that you have been teaching students at Sangmyung University for a long time. Based on your experience, what was the most difficult part for the students in learning English during the class? During class? Hmm.. This could vary per student, but I believe one of the most difficult parts is having the students speak up in English in front of their classmates. It can be incredibly uncomfortable for students to speak in front of an audience, even within their own peers. But to speak up in English can be very stressful. Most students are used to lecture-style courses, but to speak up with all eyes in the classroom on that student can be traumatizing. 3. Even though Korean students have gone through at least 9 years of regular English education, there are not that many students who speak English fluently, which is a big irony. Why do you think that is? This could be related to students being prepared for the College Entrance Exam where they must master skills such as reading, vocabulary and grammar. Speaking skills seem to take a backseat when it comes to English education especially in high school. However, the speaking abilities of our students seem to increase each year. This has been very noticeable during my time here at SMU. Each year the new incoming students seem to have increased abilities in speaking. 4. In addition to transforming the current education system, what attitudes should students take on an individual level to help solve this fundamental problem? A major problem is the process of entering university via the College Entrance Exam. Now that are students are over this hurdle and now an official college student, students should have the attitude of taking on their desired dreams and life goals. There will always be pushes to change the name of departments, to create or remove certain majors, to redesign curriculums which are meant to be effective for the future of our students, but students must focus on their goals and wishes. Students should follow the plan that they feel is right for them. Study what interests them and what they believe in. Choosing a path that relates to the students’interest and goals could be a way to help solve some of the problems our students face in the current education system. 5. Can you introduce some English Liberal Arts classes or studying materials that students would find useful? Unfortunately, the number of English Liberal Arts classes have been reduced over the past few semesters. Withing those offered, I’d recommend English Enrichment: Speaking. Also, if students are interested in taking an online course, the other available course is English Enrichment: Enrichment English through Cultural Understanding. These would be the two English Liberal Arts courses available for our students at the moment. As for study materials… hmm.. It depends on the specifics of what the student wishes to study (grammar, vocabulary, writing or speaking). There are a great number of sites students can use to help them study English. Sites such as Prepfly, British Council, Duolingo, and TED provide good materials for students who wish to study or improve their English. However, some are paid services. 6. Lastly, if there is anything you would like to say to the students of Sangmyung University, please. Please enjoy your time in college. Make the most of your time in university. Join school clubs, study and or travel abroad, participate in school programs, experience an internship, volunteer, have a mentor or be a mentor. This list could keep going, but college is just a short few years of your life, but make it a memorable and worthwhile experience. Good luck to you all this Fall Semester! Kicker: SM NEWS The Vivid Scene of Sangmyung University’s 2023 Annual Festival at Seoul Campus By Ye-Dam Hwang, Cub-reporter/ Hye-Su Kim, Cub-reporter hwangyedam1108@naver.com/ hyesu4403@icloud.com From the 18th to the 19thof May, 2023, Sangmyung University’s annual festival ‘Dae-Dong-Je; ARCHIVE – In My Camcorder’ was held at SMU’s Seoul campus. Since it was the first festival where students could participate without a face mask after COVID-19, it went on in an upbeat mood. At the festival, there were many booths of various student clubs and student councils. Several majors, including Major in Food and Nutrition, held food booths which sold various food items in limited quantities throughout the entire day of the festival to satisfy student’s hungry stomachs and thirsts. Many exciting performances were held by students from the Dance Department and by several student clubs - such as Tornado (dance), Groovin’ 187 (hip-hop) to name a few. Celebrity artists including 10cm and Dynamic Duo were also featured to perform for the students. Food trucks and photo booths were also available so that students could enjoy the festival more and as per the name of this festival this year, to archive the memory of the festival. About the booths of the festival At the festival, there are many various kinds of booths. The food trucks sold many meals and snacks like black pork with rice, chicken skewers, pizza, and churros, so students could satisfy their hunger with these foods. Some majors, including English Education, sold foods such as naengmyeon, toast, takoyaki, and fruit punch. Some student clubs like ‘Jaha-Photo’ and ‘Sangnyanghaeng’, held some events such as claw doing machine game of keyring and taking a picture with a polaroid camera. Also, there were some photo booths in severeal places of the Seoul campus: students and many people who participated in the festival could take instant photos with the special frame like su-mung frame, so pepople could file away with good memories of the day. About the performances of the festival The Main Stage Entrance Bracelet given to me (Hyesu Kim, Cub Reporter) prior to entering the area At the tennis court which served as the main stage for the 2023 Dae-Dong-Je, various performances were held from 3 pm to 9 pm by both students and celebrity artists. A student singing contest (‘Ja-Ha Ga-Yo-Je’) was held and prizes were given to the top 3 winners of whom had received the most votes directly from the audience through live QR code voting system. Perhaps one of the most remarkable performances of all, students from the Department of Dance had showed off their amazing choreographic expertise through many jaw-dropping performances that excited students and uplifted the festival’s mood as the sun was blazing and descending through the evening sky. Aside from the dance major students, many students from different performance organizations including singing (Yae-nol), dance (Tornado), hip-hop (Groovin 187), Band (Sori-Maeul) also held great performances for the audience. Sangmyung University’s President, Hong-Seong-Tae, seen on stage at 2023 before artist performances Performance by the students from Department of Dance Around 6 o’clock in the evening, Sangmyung University’s President Mr. Hong-Seong-Tae briefly appeared on stage to celebrate the annual festival and commenced the start of celebrity artist performances. The artists invited for 2023 Sangmyung University’s Dae-Dong-Je were 10cm, Heo-Seong-Hyun (2nd winner rapper of ‘Show Me The Money’) and Dynamic Duo. Band 10cm (Lead Singer Kwon-Jeong-Yeol) performing for 2023 Sangmyung University’s Festival Rapper Heo-Seong-Hyun performing his famous rap songs for Sangmyung University’s students 10cm was the first to perform, and the band’s lead singer, Kwon-Jeong-Yeol, was wildly popular among both male and female students. He was seen actively engaging with the students by giving students a chance to get a closer look at the singer in person and even shook hands with the lucky few on the first row. Rapper Heo-Seong-Hyun also gave great rap performance for the students, further proving the trend that hip-hop and rap culture is rising in its popularity among young students in South Korea. Dynamic Duo (Gae-Ko, Choi-Ja) seen throwing great hip-hop performances for Sangmyung University’s students Namely the most well-known and established South Korean rap duo, Dynamic Duo (Gae-ko & Choi-Ja), performed many of their hits from dating back many years to their recent songs which were more than sufficient to “turn up” the whole festival, and they themselves loved and appreciated Sangmyung University student’s reaction to their performances by saying that we have always been akin to hip hop as they had been a guest performer for our festivals in the past. After the artist performances were over after 9 pm, a DJ-session was available for those who wanted to continue enjoying the festival. I personally did not attend that part of the festival as it was already very late in the night. However, as my first festival experience at Sangmyung University, I am happy to say that I was more than pleased to have been a part of it and been able to enjoy the performances right in the front rows - even though it left my skin sunburned from prolonged sun exposure because I wanted to capture the best moments possible for this article for the SM HERALD! Many people who participated in this festival felt satisfaction with the variety of the festival’s diverse constituents. Also, I think the Student Council who hosted the festival made an effort to make it go well. Therefore, thank you for all the people who worked hard for the two days so that people could enjoy the festival safely and pleasantly. Kicker: SM NEWS (AWARDS) A Short Film Directed by Song Min-seok, a Graduate of Sangmyung Univeristy’s Department of Film and Video Major, Invited to Cannes By Seo-Won Hong, Reporter eunoia1025@naver.com Directed by Song Min-seok, a graduate of Sangmyung University’s Department of film and video major, the “Sweet dreams are made of this” film has been officially invited to the Cannes Film Festival's Canes Court Mertage non-competitive section. In this article, I will talk about the Cannes Film Festival and the short film “Sweet dreams are made of this”. In addition, I will introduce Sangmyung University's film and video major and deal with the vision of Sangmyung University's film and video major. What is Cannes? The 76th Cannes Film Festival runs from May 16 to May 27. The Cannes Film Festival, along with the Berlin International Film Festival and the Venice International Film Festival, is one of the so-called "three major film festivals in the world." It is held annually in May in Cannes, a city in the state of Alpes Maritimes in southeastern France. The official section of the Cannes Film Festival is divided into several parts as follows: In the competition category, about 20 invited films compete for the Palme d'Or. It is screened at the Théâtre Lumière Theater. From a notable perspective, 20 original and unique works of various regions and cultures will be presented. Originally, it was an area where new and mid-sized film directors were properly mixed, but since 2021, it has changed its character by inviting only young directors. It is shown at the Salle Debussy Theater. In the non-competitive category, it is screened at the Théâtre Lumière Theater like in the competitive category, but there is no competition for the award. It is divided into non-competition, midnight screening, and special screenings. In short films, it is divided into the short competition category (about 10 films) and the cine foundation category (film school short competition category, usually 15-20 films). The Cannes Classic Restoration Division celebrates movie heritage and shows past masterpieces and related documentaries. The Cinema of the Beach is a section that screens releases or blockbusters like the open cinema at the Busan International Film Festival. As the name suggests, the screen will be installed on the beach. Cannes Film Festival's Canes Court Mertage non-competitive section reflects the festival's willingness to pursue a creative, free, and unrestricted short format, showcasing the works of a new generation of talented people at the world's film festival. Eleven films from Korea were invited to the Cannes International Film Festival this year.Proudly, the short film " Sweet dreams are made of this" directed by Song Min-seok, a graduate of Sangmyung University's Department of film and video major, has been officially invited to the Cannes Film Festival's Canes Court Mertage non-competition section. Filming Lee Dongseop (19th class), PD Kim Minji (20th class), lighting Jung Hyunjin (17th class), art Kim Sungeun (21st class), simultaneous recording Jang Gyuri (21st class), and editing Lee Taein (20th class) participated, while Park Seokyung (18th class), Lee Yongmin (20th class) and Lim Seungtaek (17th class) appeared as actors in the short film “Sweet dreams are made of this”. Interviews with a professor and students who participated in the production of the short film "Sweet dreams are made of this." High-quality theoretical education on films and videos is provided in consideration of the reality that the cultural, artistic, and industrial values of movies and videos are increasing. In addition, the Department of Film and Video at Sangmyung University fosters talents with both theoretical and practical skills by practicing in various fields such as directing, filming, acting, and editing necessary to complete a single film and video content. Detailed majors of Sangmyung University's film and video major include film production, film theorists, media acting experts, and video content production experts. In film production, staff areas such as filming, editing, recording, and production design will be majored in depth. The educational goal of the film and video major in the production process is to cultivate excellent human resources with competitiveness in the field of major selected by students. To this end, the curriculum focuses on professional education that can combine video-related theory and knowledge with actual production skills. The Danbaeksangsoon League has become a venue for communication and exchange among college students in the Chungcheongnam-do area, who had been cut off due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This Sports Festival provided an opportunity for the hardworking students of the Department of Physical Education, who had been dedicated to their respective schools for a period of three years, to gather and promote unity and friendship. It’s a project implemented by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (MAFRA) since 2017 to spread the culture of eating breakfast and induce healthy eating habits by providing breakfast for 1,000 won to college students with a high breakfast rate. In the Cheonan campus, this project was already implemented in 2018 and this year, finally It has been introduced in the Seoul campus. Isn’t this a great project for students? From now on, let’s find out why they started the 1,000 won breakfast, the goal, and the status of implementation, and the events to commemorate this project. 1,000 won breakfast is being implemented in the form of the government providing 1,000 won and the school paying the rest if a student pays 1,000 won for a meal. In other words, 1,000 won is provided by the Korea Agency of Education, Promotion and Information Service in Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (EPIS) which is related with the MAFRA, and the university supports the remaining costs.
