제 21 호 Digital Cartoon Animation Students Awarded at Webtoon Contest

Kicker: SM News Digital Cartoon Animation Students Awarded at Webtoon Contest By Su-Young Kim, Reporter /kimsuyoung1342@gmail.com All participants, including the grand prize and the excellence prize, won the award at the mid-term webtoon contest “Webtoon Run”, which was held for university students nationwide by four students majoring in digital cartoon animation at the College of Arts. The Digital Cartoon Animation students at the College of Arts raised the status of the fine department in the comic and animation field with a feat won by all participants, including the grand prize, best prize, popularity prize, and encouragement prize, at the Webtoon Run, a mid-term webtoon contest held for university students nationwide at Jaedam Media about 90 works were submitted from 20 universities nationwide for the Webtoon Run, which was held to discover products and foster next generation webtoon artists. Webtoon Run was a public contest in which professors and students formed a team of mentors and mentees to reconstruct the webtoon creation process in the form of a marathon for a total of 42.195 days and the winners were selected through reader voting and PD evaluation. Now I will introduce some of the works that won the award. "Ebis" by the winner of the grand prize, penname Seung-gu (Kim Seung-Hwan, a sophomore student majoring in digital cartoon animation), depicts a bloody battle with a Hong Kong gangster to recover the severance pay poured into the game, and was well received by both readers and PDs for its cool development and colorful action. Based on the setting that the professor of the same department coincidentally lives in one house, the penname Kim Yeon-Geun (Kim Yeon-Jin, a sophomore student of digital cartoon animation majors), who comically describes the daily life of school and living alone, won the second prize. In addition to this, the highest number of views (penname: Kim Jang-Rae/ Kim Min-Hee, Senior of digital cartoon animation major) won the Encouragement Award, showing that all participants in Sangmyung University's digital comics and video major won the award. Professor Kim Byung-soo, who taught all four winners of the digital cartoon and video major, was awarded the Best Leader Award. Professor Kim Byung-soo, majoring in digital cartoon animation, said "In preparation for this competition, we shared opinions on the work with students every week to improve the completeness of the work," adding, "I am glad that the students' efforts have led to good results." The 46th Student Council “1st” has raised an agenda of creating a new and unrequited rental of graduation gowns and hats with unique designs of Sangmyung University, for the purpose of promoting a sense of belonging to current students and for all graduates to leave their last happy memories on campus. After discussions with the SMU academic management team, Sangmyung University held our own graduation gown design contest. Design Contest Implementation Information For the purposes above, the contest was held from November 27 to December 10, 2023, under the theme of creating Sangmyung University's own graduation gown design.The contest was held only for Sangmyung University students, and the winners were awarded a certificate in the name of the president and prize money. The design of the grand prize works was used as the official graduation gown design of Sangmyung University. After recruiting design works, online voting and screening were conducted from December 18 to 21, and the results were announced on January 1st. Graduation Gown Contest Final Result Based on the results of online votes and expert reviews, fashion design major Kim Min-young's design, which earned 1,587 online votes and 90.7 expert points, was finally chosen for the official graduation gown design of Sangmyung University. In particular, Chae-yeon Lee played an important role in directly designing the structure of the battery separator and the experimental process. The results of the study were published in the January 2024 issue of the Carbohydrate Polymers journal. The Carbohydrate Polymers journal has an impact factor of 11.2 and is ranked in the top 3.5% of Polymer Science by the Journal Citation Reports (JCR) site. First, let me provide an explanation of the Fashion Design Department before delving into the details of the graduation show and exhibition. Sangmyung University Cheonan Campus Fashion Design major is a fashion design major that fosters future-oriented fashion leaders who combine creativity and expertise. DIG:IN on displayed this time refers to the act of immersing yourself in one thing, deeply digging into the field of interest, and immersing yourself in it. It is said that the collection was prepared to show students' efforts and passion to form a "real self" in the era of "multipersona." It also has a dual meaning that can be expressed in my own way through a period of inspiration and growth after a hard and exhausting period. A total of 20 students from Sangmyung University's Fashion Design Department took part.Majors Jang Jin-woo, Kim Chae-yoon, Buck Se-won, Kang Sang-hyuk, Han Mi-na, Kim Chae-hyun, Han Soo-hyun, Deung Ja-geol, Lee Seung-yeon, Um Yu-jin, Lee Min-ju, Lee Geon-ho, Seo Cho Seo-jin, Han So-ah, Lee Yun-ju, Lee Ji-won, Jeon Hyuk-jin, Heo Su-yeon, Yoon Ye-rin and Lee Jung-yoon, participated in the exhibition. In this graduation exhibition, 40 fashion works expressing each individuality through a combination of various genres such as preppy looks, funk looks, cybercore, and traditional costumes were displayed. Twenty students set a concept that suits their style, formed a team, and presented their works in a total of six teams. The name of each piece is 1. BLACK FLAG, 2. Coup d’Etat, 3. Immatoff, 4. L.I(Live in Infinity), 5. auxo, 6. CORRUPTION. I will select some of these works and introduce and explain them. BLACK FLAG The meaning of BLACK FLAG is that World War III occur in the wake of the unidentified nuclear explosion and the existing Seoul becomes a ruin. The concept is that Seoul will become a society of drugs, violence, and corruption and become a dystopia of anarchy that loots each other. This situation expressed the guerilla group's clothing in a Korean dystopian situation with funk and guerillasclothing as the next generation of anarchists about post-apocalypse-style wars. Coup d’Etat Coup d'Etat's concept is a Mongolian student anti-establishment movement. Held in July every year in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, all Mongolians, regardless of gender and age, participate in the Naadam Festival, which has a religious meaning to pray for the growth and abundance of livestock that are important in nomadic life. However, it has been suspended due to COVID-19. If it is held again, it is a new expression of the anti-regime movement clothing of young Mongolian students in the sense of developing traditional clothing with street funk and preppy clothing rather than conservative traditional clothing. auxo The concept of auxo is coral reefs. Sangmyung University Space Design Major Exhibition at Dongdaemun Design Palaza (DDP) (All pictures below are taken by the author) The Department of Space Design was the first department to hold a collaborative exhibition at Dongdaemun Design Palaza (DDP) last year. The exhibition “PUSH KEYSTONE: Enter Your Identity” featured 43 works including space designs, furniture design works by 39 undergraduate students in senior year of college and photospot works by sophomore and junior students. The exhibition analyzed problems arising from the access of advanced society from various perspectives and sought solutions to solve social problems spatially. Introduction to the exhibition KEYSTONE is a term that refers to the key stone for the maintenance and support of the Roman arch stone structure. Each arch structure has its own KEYSTONE fits its shape. KEYSTONE was used as a symbolic medium to feature the spatial answers to social problems happening at present. Jo Ah-ram, 4th grader in the Department of Space Design, who is the chair of the exhibition preparation committee, said, “We have prepared to show the speciality of our Space Design students’ works to be displayed in DDP, like Keystone, which also defines the nature of the entire space.” He also said, “We ask for your attention to this DDP cooperation exhibition, where visitors can have a new time to reflect on their own Keystone as a participant in the exhibition after viewing.” Jeong Eun-seok, a professor of the Department of Space Design, said, “This exhibition shows the results of students’ continuous efforts to solve social problems spatially. I’m happy to have been selected for the Seoul Design Foundation collaborative exhibition for the second consecutive years following last year, and I appreciate the students and advice from professors.” The Department of Space Design at Sangmyung University is the first major in Korea to establish a four-year term indoor design education program and has won more than 50 contests, including the grand prize every year. Kicker: SM NEWS (EVENT) An Undergraduate Student, 3rd grade in the Department of Green Chemical Engineering, Participated as the First Author in an International Academic Journal Registered on SCI By Seo-Won Hong, Reporter eunoia1025@naver.com A paper “A Facile Method to Fabricate an Enclosed Paper-Based Analytical Device via Double-Sided Patterning for Ionic Contaminant Detection” by a research team of Kang Sung-min professor of the Department of Green Chemical Engineering at Sangmyung University (SMU) was published in the SCI International Academic Journal (Biosensors, IF:5.400). Lee Eun-ho, 3rd grade in Sangmyung University’s Department of Green Chemical Engineering participated as the first author in the paper. In this article, I will take a closer look at the paper written by a research team of Sangmyung University. Microfluidic paper-based analytical devices (μPAD) which are conventional devices and an open-channel system have limitations for application as analytical platforms because of the evaporation and contamination of the sample solution. Professor Kang Sung-min’s research team demonstrates the design and fabrication of an enclosed three-dimensional(3D)-μPAD. This study has also presented the application as a primary early analysis platform. Through this study, heavy metal ions such as copper (Cu2+), nickel (Ni2+), and mercury (Hg2+), which lead the contamination of water, as well as radioactive cesium-137 ions (Cs+) can be detected though color changes simultaneously. An Enclosed three-dimensional(3D)-μPAD could be used as primary early detection sensors for water pollution enabling multiple analyses of unknown samples, it is expected to contribute to the development of environmental monitoring and biosensors field. The research was conducted by the collaborative research team of Professor Kang Sung-min from the Department of Green Chemical Engineering at Sangmyung University and Professor Jeong Heon-ho from the Department of Chemical and Engineering at Chonnam National University. I’d like to walk you through the details of the 2023 winter language program. And the conclusion of the Korea-German Employment Agreement also celebrated its 60th anniversary. In commemoration of this, the German-speaking Regional Studies major at the Global Humanities College of Sangmyung University and the Korean & German Teachers Council jointly hosted the commemorative event, “140+ in Cheonan (140 jahre deutch-koreanische beziehungen)”, that was co-directed by Sangmyung University and Dankook University. "140+ in Cheonan" is an event that discusses ways to enhance bilateral cooperation, with the theme of "Steps for the Future of Korea and Germany in Cheonan," and aims to promote and pursue mutual development. This event, which took the form of explanation and discussion, was held on November 2nd at the Sangmyung University Academic Information Center, Room 404. Then, the event was organized in four parts, showing various topics such as industry, culture, and education in Korea and Germany. The first part of the program focused on industrial talent and midsize companies, explaining the challenges of Korean midsize companies in the next 10 years and soft skills that will give a competitive advantage for future talent. The second part of the program offered a glimpse into German culture with the play <Schneewittchen> by Dankook University students and the choir performance <Hänschen klein/Lieblingsmensch> by Sangmyung University students. 제 19 호 Reorganization of Relative Evaluation Rating Ratio

Kicker: SM NEWS Reorganization of Relative Evaluation Rating Ratio By Jun-Seo Park, Reporter from23juns@naver.com From the first semester of 2023, the ratio of relative evaluation grades was reorganized when giving credits in our university. Before the reorganization, it was operated so that students could receive each grade A, B, and C at a rate of 30%, 40%, and 30% of all students. However, after the reorganization, up to 45% of the total students could receive credits equivalent to A+ and A, and credits equivalent to B+ or less could be given by discretion of the professor. The background of the reorganization as mentioned above was explained by the Academic Affairs Office of this school as follows: “Given that the ratio of receiving A credits from Sangmyung University is currently lower than that of other universities, the school's Academic Affairs Office intends to ease the criteria for benefits under the judgment that it may be difficult for students to secure competitiveness in the job market in the future.” https://www.jamesgmartin.center/2020/07/if-all-men-are-created-equal-why-do-we-need-grades/ Arguments for Approval The opinion in favor is argued as follows. It is possible to increase credit competitiveness in the job market compared to other universities and to reduce academic burdens and prevent overheating of competition by easing standards. It also provides an opportunity for students to participate in extracurricular activities by alleviating fatigue with credits. Arguments for Disapproval The opposing position argues as follows. If the evaluation criteria are eased, the screening criteria may become ambiguous as the ratio of high ranked students expands, reducing discrimination and increasing the number of recipients of academic scholarships. In addition, individual students' understanding of their major may decrease, and the number of people who do not achieve academic achievement may increase. I think that both the pros and cons have reasonable reasons. However, I think it is too much that the ratio of credits corresponding to A and A+ is 45%. It is good to increase students' credit competitiveness in the job market, but if the ratio of A and A+ is too high, students may lose motivation for their studies. In particular, what is more important in recent years is practical abilities rather than credits themselves, so I think it is important for students to voluntarily improve their understanding of their major. Anyway, the reorganization is definitive, so even if there is something that you don't like, it would be desirable to find ways to improve your abilities and do well in school accordingly.
