Commodity plastics are plastics that are used in high volume and a wide range of applications, such as film for packaging, photographic and magnetic tape, clothing, beverage and trash containers and a variety of household products where mechanical properties and service environments are not critical. Examples of commodity plastics are polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene, polyvinyl chloride, poly(methyl methacrylate) and more. Kang Sang-wook, professor of Sangmyung University Recently, a research team led by Kang Sang-wook, professor of Sangmyung University, and a graduate student, Kim Min-soo, announced that they had secured technology to obtain ethylene and propylene at low cost, which are materials for commodity plastic. Olefin materials, such as ethylene and propylene in crude oil, are separated and produced through processes of a distillation column in petrochemical complexes. Generally, they are separated using different boiling points. The process of boiling and cooling at temperatures below minus 30 degrees must be repeated more than 100 times to obtain ethylene and propylene of a high degree of purity. Efforts have been made all over the world to replace the previous separation technique because its cost amounts to about 200 billion won a year in Korea.The membrane, which utilizes silver (Ag) ions, can get high purity olefin material with just one pass, but problems have been found in terms of durability.As a way to replace this, a membrane using silver (Ag) nanoparticles has been developed and this has received much attention due to its excellent durability.However, there were many difficulties in commercialization due to low transmission performance.To improve this, Professor Kang Sang-wook and his team recently succeeded in developing an olefin membrane that shows high permeability and mechanical properties at the same time utilizing durable silver (Ag) nanoparticles. The newly developed partitioning membrane is expected to replace the existing high-cost distillation column separation process if further cost-cutting studies are carried out. Kicker: SM News A Brand New Way to Get Along Volunteering at a Soup Kitchen by Dong-wook Kim, Cub-Reporter smartpodo@kakao.com Recently, there has been a lot of Individualism going on in our society. People are not talking to each other like before and are not communicating with acquaintances. This kind of meta is toxic in our society, not being beneficial for the developmental perspective. Individualism is also spreading in universities. According to the statistics of “Albamon”, approximately 38.5% of the freshmen are living as a “Voluntary Individualist.” Will there be some solutions to this single favored situation? On April 1st, students of the Department of Food and Nutrition of Sangmyung Univ. did volunteering at a soup kitchen to enhance the friendship between the elders and the freshmen. According to one of the freshmen’s interview after the volunteering, he said, “Breaking the ice was such a hard time for me when I first entered our school. Then my major started collecting people for this food canteen volunteering. After visiting the elderly welfare center to deliver food to the elderly, I got to know more elders and companions in my major. The volunteering was tough, but the suffering was worth it.” Students Serving Food By this interview, it seems that volunteering is effecting much wider boundaries than just working. Being interactive with people doing the duty can make both feel connected. Thus, this can ease the Individualism going on these days. The volunteering can be anything else other than serving out food from the kitchen. The volunteering subject can be the person’s major like teaching a language or coaching how to be in shape. These activities might just begin as an exercise for building a resume but in the long term, people who chose to be alone will join in. Kwon Ji-wook is an English Education Department student who studied language training in California. One day, he rescued a drowning person. As a result, Kwon Ji-wook student was awarded the prize. The following is an interview with Kwon Ji-wook. ▲ Kwon Ji-wook Q. What was the situation like at that time? Kwon Ji-wook: On Saturday, January 19th, 2019 (US local time is dawn on 20th), I went to the weekend tour of Newport Beach’s Whale Watching at school. While playing in the pool, a friend who lose strength in the depths could not get out of the water. Immediately we have asked for help and called 911. My friend rescued the drowning friend, and I alternated performing CPR directly. Q. Did you learn CPR separately? Kwon Ji-wook: Student of education school are required to complete CPR training before they graduate. When I was in the first semester of the first grade, I completed my CPR training. Q. Tell me your feeling about being awarded a prize. Kwon Ji-wook: I'm thankful that I've won an undeserved award compared to what I did. Q. What do you want to say to Sangmyung University? Kwon Ji-wook: When I went to the language training program, the dormitory was not heated or was out of order. Also there was no safety life guard working at the swimming pool. In this respect, I hope the school looks closely before send students to a language training program. Also I hope that the school will be more active to console victims and will provide a manual on how to deal with emergency situations during a language training program. In the U.S. hospital, police officers came to investigate the accident; it was hard to explain the whole situation in English. We needed someone to help on the spot. There were no officials to help. The school manager could not speak Korean.

Volunteer Work that Must be Filled with Necessity, Do You Know It Has Changed? By Ju-eun Yeon/Reporter Yeonje1113@naver.com Many students have great confusion about the volunteer work process. Let’s find out about the changes to the volunteer work process and how to complete the volunteer subject. First, let’s find out the changed volunteer time. Previously, the new student of 2014 to 2017 had to do more than 58 hours of volunteer work. From this year, they will meet the conditions for volunteer work even if they fill only 28 hours, but only one credit will be granted. The rest of the credits can be filled with the essential liberal arts courses. You can choose whether to fill more than 58 hours instead of two credits or 28 hours instead of one credit. From the new student of 2018, they only fill 28 hours without any changes. Next, let’s take a look at the operational procedures. First, you need to contact a volunteer agency to do volunteer work. And then, apply for volunteer classes in the semester when you can fill with volunteer time. Then, you receive prior education from your professor in charge. Next, you enter the performance of the volunteer time directly into the university information system and submit the performance documents to the professor in charge. Finally, the professor in charge will give you a credit by pass or fail. Volunteers should be invited to a welfare center where performance is recognized at 1365(the site of volunteering) or VMS (Volunteer Management System). ▲The Homepage of 1365 Finally, I will explain the confusing points about the volunteer subject. Q1) Do I have to go to pre education? A1. Yes. Otherwise, you will get a fail grade and pre education gives you 2 hours of volunteer time. Q2) I take classes on Saturday. Do I have to go to school on the weekend? A2. No. Just take the pre-education. Perhaps the professor in charge will never call you because of volunteer work on the weekend. Q3) Can I apply for this at any time? A3. Right and wrong. You can apply for the volunteer subject at any time if you satisfy the volunteer time. Q4) Is the volunteer work that I did during the vacation acceptable? A4. Yes. You will busy during the semester, so fill it up in advance using the vacation. However, you should fill 2 hours of volunteer time during the semester. Q5. When can I give the professor in charge the performance documents? A5. Any time you have finished your volunteer time! Kicker: SM News Baek Ehunggi, President of Sangmyung University, has prepared a bridgehead for exchange and cooperation with Myanmar By Su-jeong Sim, Reporter tlatnwjd97@naver.com Sangmyung University announced that President Baek Ehunggi visited Yangon, Myanmar, on February 12th~13th, and set up a bridgehead for exchanges and cooperation with various institutions in Myanmar. Jo Hang-rok, head of the Foreign Cooperation Agency, and Choi Eun-jeong, president of the Graduate School of Business, accompanied him and discussed ways to cooperate with each other in Myanmar. With Yangon University of Foreign Studies' President-in-chief, they discussed exchange and cooperation, including exchange of students and professors from both universities, and the promotion of joint research projects. They visited the Myanmar Chamber of Commerce and Industry (UMFCCI) to discuss the establishment of a short-term management program for corporate executives in Myanmar. They discussed holding a mini-MBA program, which will run for about two weeks within this year, at Sangmyung University. Afterwards, they discussed setting up an opening propel of MBA course for executives and employees of the Myanmar Chamber of Commerce and Industry. SMU Holds Capacity Building Program for Professors by Sarah Chae, Editor sarah3fran@gmail.com A capacity building program for promoted, new and re-appointed professors was held by the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) of Sangmyung University (SMU). The event took place at the Centuria Building, SMU Seoul Campus for 2 days, on February 14th and 15th. This education program for professors was held as SMU has judged abilities of the teaching staff as the core of competitiveness nowadays. Recent situations have shown that universities are in states of crisis. Educational environments have changed and the fall of school-age population has led to admission problems (lower quotas). Therefore, to increase the competitiveness of SMU “The Past and Present of Our University, and the Innovation and Changes of the Future” was chosen as the topic of the whole program. The CTL has judged that strengthening teaching methods has its limits to capacity building. For such reasons, the focus of the program was on creating opportunities to explore strategies for the changes of school platforms and strengthen creative convergence education. Different programs were taken between new professors and promoted or re-appointed professors. The whole capacity building program consisted of programs like “Information education for strengthening creative convergence education”, “Understanding university structure and policy according to the recent environmental changes of universities”, “Team activity programs that use coding education”, “A talk with a senior professor”, “Surviving/Growing strategies to overcome the age of uncertainty”, and more. SMU was the first among domestic universities to hold this kind of program. Photo Exhibition Photographed in the Heart with the Visually Impaired by Min-gyeong Lee, Editor lee.mkpeach@gmail.com △ 2018 The World Seen Through Heart – The Story of the Namdae-mun Market On December 21st, at the Art Design Center in Sangmyuong University in Seoul, “2018 The World Seen Through Heart – The Story of the Namdae-mun Market”, photograph exhibition by visually impair artists, was held, which was supervised by Yang Jeong-hoon, Director of the Media Research Institute at Sangmyung University and sponsored by “The World Seen Through the Mind”. It was designed to provide equal opportunities of visual arts activities for the visually impaired. The photos taken by visually impaired people who took part in the photo class for five months every year starting from the 2007 Toa Art Festival Project Invitation was shown at the exhibition. Every year, students who major in the Photo and Video Content in Sangmyung University have participated as volunteer mentors and have been working together on the activities of taking photos and educational instructors and preparing the exhibition. There were various attractions, such as tactile pictures that could be touched with hands, photos that could be seen with light, etc, totalling about 40 works and their theme is "Namdaemun Market”.
