Students who donated their talents visited 17 households and wished 31 elderly people a long life by doing hairstyling, makeup, directing, and taking photos of longevity. This volunteer activity was started to prepare students for meaningful growth experiences through a project that records the space and memories of life together based on their major competencies. The team’s name "Collect," which means recording the object, and the choice of the filming method can change the meaning of the object in that the meaning of the word can be changed by the choice of vowels. Unlike the previous format, the photos of Jangsu were taken out with white cloth and blankets used by the elderly wearing their favorite clothes in the background. In addition, the life and memories of the elderly are captured in the background of the house. Park Jae-hee, a student of the vowel team, said it was a meaningful experience to meet and talk with senior citizens in the region where the team members had grown up since they were young, and I hope the elderly will be happy looking back on their lives and memories through longevity photos. Kicker: SM NEWS 2024 Sangmyung University Festival: “Operation Name Youth!” By Min-Ju Kim, Cub-reporter/ Ga-On Baek, Cub-reporter rlaalswn029@naver.com/ 202411241@sangmyung.kr Sangmyung University Seoul Campus 2024 Central Steering Committee held a festival called “Operation Name Youth!” for a total of three days from May 22nd Wednesday to May 24th Friday. Unlike last year’s festival, which lasted for two days, this year’s festival made students’ expectations higher due to a day extension. In students’ repetitive and busy lives, Daedongjae made students become one big community and enjoy all together without anyone being left out. The dress code was green like sprouts in the hope that the school would look like a big meadow; therefore, many students were seen wearing green with matching accessories. The majority of students bought food from food trucks, participated in events and games, and, last but not least, enjoyed various club performances during the day. At night, they went to the tennis court where the main stage was located and enjoyed exciting performances, and their passion lasted until midnight. 2024 Daedongjae Poster, Instagram: @sangmyung_uni Clubs and Entertainers’ Performances On the first day, the festival began with performances of clubs at the vacant lot behind the deer statue and small stage (SMU Square). Although there were no celebrity performances scheduled, many students gathered to watch the stage together, and their expectations were raised further for the rest of the festival. On the second day, Yaenol, Auheung, Tornado, the Student Council of Convergence Engineering, Just, and Baltik performed at the same place as on the first day. Prie, Groovin’ 187, Yaenol, Mirae Education-dance, and Jaha Music Festival performed on the main stage, and invited entertainers, EPEX and Younha, performed after the school club performances. On the last day, there were no performances at other venues except for, the main stage. Performances of invited entertainers, Choi YuRee, Han Yohan, and STAYC were held at the end of the Sound Village Performance. The invited entertainer’s vocal and stage presence filled the area with students’ cheers and fiery passion. Each entertainer’s performance ended within an hour, and their performances made students all join together and enjoy the moment. The College of Education sold various foods, such as hwachae, tornado potatoes, skewers, and cocktails, at booth number 17, located at the entrance of the College of Education building’s second floor. Meanwhile, the College of Convergence Engineering offered sausages, lemonade, and misugaru at the second booth on the right side of the path leading to the Academic Information Center/Millennium Hall parking lot. The College of Business Administration sold fried jjondegui with various seasonings behind Millenium Hall and held various events, such as dart games, throughout the campus. The College of Humanities and Social Sciences held face painting at the Jahagwan, while the College of Culture and Arts held caricature drawing, a flea market, and sold green bandanas for those who didn’t have a green item at the Art Management building. Additionally, they sold Chinese cuisine, fried chicken with coke, and more. Furthermore, a variety of food trucks came to the campus, offering delicacies like bulgogi sushi, churros, black pork rice bowls, and sundae-gopchang stir-fry, enriching the culinary experience. Booths located along the path to the College of Business and Economic, Instagram: @sangmyung_uni Interviews A member of the Student Council Yoona Kang who organized the festival said that when selecting the festival program, they tried to plan the festival as an activity that students could participate in and also played games to make profits. It was also regrettable that there were fewer students volunteering for the festival, but it was better because there were rewards, such as having a dinner among the students who controlled the event if they earned a profit.A professor at the College of Culture and Arts Hee-eun Yang said that it is very meaningful to participate in the festival because it is a romance that can only be enjoyed for a few days a year and four years in college. In addition, she said that festivals play a big role in forming a university culture and not only eating delicious food and seeing and enjoying celebrities with friends, but also planning, leading, and attracting people to the festival because she thinks that such efforts are helpful for social life. As the years go by after COVID-19, the festival becomes more organized through various experiences, and each school seems to be in a competitive direction. The university festival offers various benefits to students. First, the festival offers opportunities for students from various departments and grades to get together and interact with each other. This allows them to make new friends and expand their networking. She was awarded for her contribution to strengthening the national cybersecurity capabilities of the national information and communication infrastructure.Starting with her research for Information and Communication Policy in 1999, Professor Yoo Ji-yeon has been developing digital strategies, future strategies, and technology policies. After she moved to Sangmyung University in 2014, she executed various studies about safe technology development and response system construction. With these various achievements, she has become a representative researcher about technology policy for national digital risk management. Also, she performs actively in various government activities such as Audit of the Korean Cyber Security Association, Director of the Information Security Association, and the Ministry of Science and ICT, the Korea Communications Commission, the Ministry of Public Administration and Security, the National Cyber Security Center, and the Defense Acquisition Program Administration.In addition, by taking on the presidency of the Korean Internet Ethics Association, she is interested in the safe coexistence of humans and technology, the creation of a sustainable technological society and contributing to the development of the national society. In this season, did you just go to the library? However, if you look everywhere at the school, you can easily encounter spaces where you can sit and study for a while in various atmospheres and environments. Now, how far do you know these spaces? For those of you who are studying in the library and looking for a new place, I would like to take a look at all the various spaces where you can know and use. On the Seoul campus, there are seven buildings where students can study or spend their leisure time. Let's look at them one by one. First, Hall H, Student's Union. In this building, there are two places where students can study. There are five tables that four students can sit each on the first floor. In addition, there is the same type of table on the second floor. The spaces mentioned above are open to eating. It is usually open until 17:30. When you visit, you can enter the third floor if the first and second floors are locked. Second, Hall N the so-called Jahagwan. This building is mainly used by Humanities and Social Science majors. On the first floor, The Linc+ Open Lab which has single and table seats. There are three tables for four people to study. In Hall N, there are various types of spaces to visit and spend time for students from the second, third, fourth and fifth floors.In the second to fifth floor spaces, eating is allowed. Third, Hall G which is the second engineering hall. In the Hall G, there is the SW LOUNGE on the first floor where it is possible to eat. Therefore, it is often used when students spend time together as a group. This space also has a single person space and table seats. Since there are many practice rooms in the G Hall for Computer Science students, the first floor is the only publicly available space. Fourth, the Millennium Hall of Business and Economics, Building T. It has the COLLABORATE LEARNING PARK on the first floor. It offers various types of seats such as room-style, sofa and single-person spaces. It can accommodate more than 30 students and is open from 9:00~17:30 on weekdays. It is closed on holidays and weekends. On the second floor at the right end of the stairs, there are long table seats and single seats are located. On the third floor, there is a small space in the area connected to the escalator. Finally, there is the STARTUP DREAMUP SPACE which is used for various purposes such as taking a nap and studying. It is not used separately as a reservation system. Fifth, Hall L, the Library. As many students know, there is a READING LOUNGE on the first floor. The PC can also be used, and it is a large space and run from 6:00~24:00. On each floor, some sofas and chairs are located in the center.On the third floor, eight group study rooms are located. To use the study rooms, you should reserve through the Library application. On the fourth floor, there are two general study rooms. They also need reservation by app. These rooms are open from 6:00 to 23:00. In addition, during test periods, the library is open 24 hours a day for a certain period. Sixth, Hall A, the Collge of Education. It has long table seats that six students can sit at each table on the first floor and there are various types of seats available at the Innovation Convergence Park next to GS25 on the first basement floor. It runs to a late time, so many students often use this place during exam periods. Lastly, the Future Centennial Hall. On the first basement floor, the Oreum Education Lounge is located across from the cafe. There are bench table seats and single-person seats. It is suitable for classmates who want to study in an open space. In addition, there are two tables on the second floor. Therefore, it can be useful for chatting or doing assignments during free time. Kicker: SM NEWS FASHION SHOW A freshman in university was already planning a fashion show? By Myung-Kwan Kang Kmmg199999@naver.com Cheonan in Chungcheongnam-do is known as a cultural city, hosting a variety of cultural festivals every month. Let's take a look at a program from the Cheonan Myeongjiyeok Street Festival, which took place from April 26th to 28th for three days. The name "Myeongjiyeok Street" is derived from the first words of three locations in Cheonan: Myeongdong Daeheung-ro Shopping Street, Jihado Shopping Street(Underground shopping street), and Yeokjeon Market. According to reports, the fashion show held at 12 p.m. on April 27th as part of the 3rd Myeongjiyeok Street Festival was overseen by Gwan-ho Kim, a freshman at Sangmyung University. After enrolling at Sangmyung University, Kwan-ho Kim developed an interest in fashion through his courses. Subsequently, while seeking fashion-related activities, he decided to collaborate with Eum, the Cheonan Youth Welfare Center. As a result, he took on the role of overseeing the retro fashion show, which is part of the Cheonan Myeongjiyeok Street Festival program. The preparation period was about three weeks, but since it overlapped with the exam period, it was an extremely short time to prepare for the fashion show. Due to the limited preparation time and budget, Kwan-ho Kim opted for simplicity and minimalism, foregoing the grandeur and extravagance of the outfits and stage. As a result, approximately 44 SSFW (Spring/Summer/Fall/Winter) outfits were completed. Kwan-ho Kim considered the purpose of the event, which was Cheonan Retro Fashion Week, and purchased vintage clothing from Cheonan Myeongdong Market. He divided the outfits into SS (Spring/Summer) and FW (Fall/Winter) concepts. For the SS collection, he aimed to express the warm and passionate feelings of spring and summer by incorporating bright, vibrant colors and elaborate details throughout. Additionally, since spring and summer fashion typically involves lightweight and thin fabrics, he curated the collection using such materials. For the FW (Fall/Winter) collection, he aimed to tone down the flashy and vibrant atmosphere, adding a sense of moderation by incorporating long-length thick fabrics and a monochromatic color scheme. This curation resulted in fashion with a clean and dandy atmosphere. Furthermore, this fashion show involved not only coordinating outfits but also personally selecting models suitable for the fashion. The criteria for fashion models were set at a height of over 180cm, good looks, and a body shape that suited the clothes, resulting in a total of 11 fantastic models being selected. The 11 gathered students were mostly from Sangmyung University as well. They assembled the day before the fashion show for costume fittings and walk rehearsals. As most of the models were new to fashion shows, they practiced walking countless times to achieve a natural stride. The fashion show took place on April 27th at 12 p.m., starting with a description of Kwan-ho Kim's fashion show and music. Though it was a small-scale event, many people came to watch, and the prepared seats were fully occupied. The fashion show was also broadcast on JTB Daejeon Broadcasting, and both the SS collection and FW collection were successfully presented. Could you tell us about any hardships you faced? Kwan-ho Kim: The short preparation period and overlapping exam schedule made the preparation extremely challenging. Additionally, as it was my first time organizing a fashion show, I spent several nights without sleep. Moreover, I sought help from seniors for tasks that were difficult to handle alone. Especially during the planning stage of the fashion show, I encountered many difficulties, so I searched for videos of fashion shows from famous brands and related materials. Myung-Kwan Kang: If there was a fun episode during the preparation period, please share it with us. Kwan-ho Kim: Due to our busy schedules, the rehearsal ended up being held on the day before the fashion show. All the models were men, but the person helping with the styling was a woman, which made us feel a bit awkward as we prepared. However, since we had reached an agreement, we enjoyed preparing together, and it turned out to be a memorable experience. Myung-Kwan Kang: Please say something about your future aspirations or what you want to say. Kwan-ho Kim: Before expressing my aspirations, I would like to extend my heartfelt gratitude. I am truly thankful to the audience and models who attended the fashion show, as well as to the costume designers and seniors. Since 2022, the Korean Language and Culture Major has been continuing international language and culture exchanges with students majoring in Korean language and Korean Studies at overseas universities for two years. The Language and Culture Exchange program is an activity in which Korean students from Sangmyung University and foreign students from overseas universities exchange their own culture in Korean through online video calls. The universities participating in the 5th International Language and Culture Exchange are Pakistan National University of Foreign Studies, Turkiye National Istanbul University, Azerbaijan National University of Language, Bucharest University of Romania, and Dynam University of Vietnam, with a total of 64 students participating. This year, additional foreign universities in Azerbaijan, Romania, and Vietnam participated, and the number of participating students increased by 50 compared to the last semester. The international language and culture exchange meeting will conclude with a team of students from overseas universities and students from Sangmyung University's Korean Language and Culture Major and Global Regional Studies Department, exchanging foreign cultures and performance reports in Korean by June. I interviewed Hale Sevde Ozen, a student at the National Istanbul University in Turkiye, who is currently participating in the program, and Vu Thi Nhi, a student at Dynam University in Vietnam. Hale Sevde Ozen said she found out about the program because her school professor told her, and that she had many similar opportunities before, but regretted not participating, so she applied this time. They also answered that it was good and satisfying to have the experience of exchanging each other's cultures through the program. Vu Thi Nhi also said that he learned about the program through the guidance and recommendation of her school professor, and that he applied to learn about Korean culture and life while making Korean friends, and that he wanted to improve his language skills because he majored in Korean. Kicker : SM NEWS ROTC By Myung-Gwan Kang Kmmg199999@naver.com ROTC stands for Reserve Officer’ Training Corps and is an American officer training course. Most people have heard of it but don't know much about it. The reason is that Korea has a conscription system, so only men should go to the military and become ordinary soldiers. The ROTC system was established on June 1, 1961, as a student military training corps at 16 universities across the country. Basic Military Training Twelve members of Sangmyung University's ROTC 64th class completed about four weeks of winter enlistment training from December 26th to January 19th. Sangmyung University ROTC students were assigned to the 2nd Battalion of the 3rd Brigade and participated in training. The training included all basic training, including individual battle, marching, shooting, chemical, biological and radiological training, firearms training, and grenades. Additionally, cadet Kim Min-wook conducted training as a battalion commander cadet representing the 2nd Battalion, and cadet Kang Seung-ho conducted training as a platoon leader of the 1st Platoon of the 1st Company of the 2nd Battalion. In addition, many cadets applied for roles they could play, such as administrative department head, operations manager, and squad leader, and successfully completed them. In shooting training, cadet Kim Seok-min hit 19 out of 20 shots on target, showcasing his shooting talent in comparison to other cadets. Other cadets also earned the title of special marksman by hitting more than 16 shots. During the marching training, a 20km march was conducted in full combat gear, but all Sangmyung University ROTC cadets supported one another and completed the entire march to the end. Cadet Interviews I interviewed cadets Kang Seung-ho, Kim Min-wook, and Kang Seong-mo about what their first training was like. Cadet Kang Seung-ho said that he was very nervous because it was his first training, but he was very interested in and knowledgeable about the military, so it wasn't too difficult. Cadet Kim Min-wook said that although there were many difficulties while being a battalion commander cadet representing 200 people, he was able to improve further by engaging in training responsibly. Cadet Kang Seong-mo said that he had a really hard time during the march and wanted to quit, but because he was with his classmates, he did not give up and was able to continue until the end. Sangmyung University Cadets' Evaluation There were concerns that Sangmyung University's cadets would not be able to adapt well due to the small number of cadets compared to other schools, but contrary to their worries, all 12 cadets were evaluated as top talent. Additionally, the school district leader and disciplinary officer said that they had done really well and worked hard over the past 4 weeks and that they were looking forward to the days ahead. ROTC Benefits If you are selected for ROTC, you will receive 12 million won in short-term service incentive in your third grade. The short-term service incentive referred to here is an incentive paid to those who apply to become officers or non-commissioned officers in all military services in Korea, including the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, and Air Force, and are finally accepted. In addition, in the case of university students before their appointment, they will receive a monthly stipend of approximately 130,000 won for maintenance of dignity. You will receive training during the vacation period, and after completing the training, they can receive an additional salary of approximately 1,000,000 won. Kicker: SM NEWS Sangmyung University Job Plus Center’s Earning Best Rating for University Job Plus Center Project 2023 By Ye-Dam Hwang, Reporter hwangyedam1108@naver.com The Sangmyung University Job Plus Center got the highest grade for the second consecutive year in the 2023 University Job Plus Center Operation Performance Evaluation organized by the Ministry of Employment and Labor, Seoul Metropolitan Government, and the Korea Employment Information Service. The University Job Plus Center is a project by the Ministry of Employment and Labor to provide specialized employment services to current students and local young people by strengthening functional and spatial linkage and integration of career and employment support systems in universities, linking industries, and promoting employment. With this result of the highest grade, the Sangmyung University Job Plus Center has been recognized for the employment of current students and young people. Sangmyung University Job Plus Center It is meaningful that Sangmyung University’s Job Plus Center has earned the best rating for a university job plus center project in 2023. This center has been in operation for 10 years from 2015 to 2024, and has operated 1,200 employment programs to provide more than 100,000 university students and local young people with business education, practical mock job interviews, and site visits including know-how about employment. Receiving 450 million won from the Ministry of Employment and Labor in 2023 and 129 million won from the Seoul Metropolitan Government, the Sangmyung University Job Plus Center established an optimal employment support system for enrolled students and local youth and received the highest grade in the performance evaluation of the University Job Plus Center in 2023. Programs and Activities The Sangmyung University Job Plus Center has introduced many employment programs and activities for registered students and other young people who are preparing to find a job. It introduced career/employment programs in various fields such as preparation for public enterprises, support for extracurricular activities, certificates, and job interview preparation, and recently guided the recruitment of 2023 winter SM job camp and the domestic field practice semester system (second round) for the first semester of 2024. In addition, the Center helps career exploration through examinations such as occupational aptitude test, job value test, and entrepreneurial aptitude test on its website, and provides tests so that people can explore on their own through an employment perception test and self-characteristics test. Furthermore, it introduces various recruitment information to support the practical time and provides counseling such as mentoring with a consultant. It is clear that Sangmyung University Job Plus Center’s earning the best rating for a university job plus center project 2023 is an important result for us. This result shows that our university’s job plus center did great work to introduce and provide many programs and activities about employment and career for our university students and other young people who wants to get a job.
