This presents a valuable opportunity to explore different fields before making a decision and to engage in meaningful conversations with professors in those disciplines. Although this event is held annually, many students remain unaware of it or do not take full advantage of the opportunity. Why not seize this chance to participate and discover what each major has to offer? Experience Various Majors The Major Exploration Fair, held this October at Sangmyung University’s Seoul and Cheonan campuses, aimed to support students interested in specialized or multi-major tracks by enhancing adaptability and retention rates. The event welcomed prospective freshmen, parents, and entrance exam guidance teachers, providing them with campus tours and detailed explanations about the entrance process. By gathering feedback from attendees, the fair also sought to better understand the demand for information on university programs and admission criteria, allowing the university to better meet prospective students' needs. Program Introduction The fair offered valuable opportunities for prospective students, freshmen, and seniors alike. Each major’s booth provided consultations led by professors and current students, while QR codes at each booth allowed attendees to access information, confirm their participation, and receive souvenirs. In the integrated major promotion zone, each department’s materials were displayed on banners, and major introduction videos played on large screens. Attendees could also receive career counseling from professional advisors, including guidance on career paths after graduation. At the government-supported education business booth, visitors could learn about various major systems, including curricula for interdisciplinary programs. Interview with Participants 1. Hello, thank you so much for taking the time to speak with me today. To start, could you please introduce yourself? Nice to meet you. I'm Yu-min, a freshman majoring in intellectual property. 2. I heard that you participated in the 2024 Major Exploration Fair. Why did you participate? I decided to participate because I’m considering a double major and wanted some guidance. As a freshman, there was still a lot I didn’t know, but this opportunity allowed me to reconsider the major I'm studying in my department. By consulting on the curriculum of the department I’m interested in, I was able to receive valuable support in defining my career path. 3. Would you be interested in participating again? Of course. I would recommend it to others. For freshmen, it’s a great opportunity to think about and plan how to spend the remaining semesters. Even for upperclassmen, the advantage is being able to ask professors directly, which helps in setting more specific goals. 4. Lastly, what areas do you think could be improved? Attractive promotions that can grab students' attention are necessary. Since there are often high-ranking individuals, like professors, present during visits, I think it would be helpful to have more students available who can create a friendly and approachable environment, making it easier for others to ask questions. To graduate, students must choose from multiple majors, minors, or advanced majors. Each study room has unique features such as varying capacities, available facilities, like blackboards, and different hours of availability. These distinctions make it essential to select a study room based on specific needs and study goals. To help you make the best choice, here are practical tips for choosing and reserving a study room that suits your purpose. Also included are key guidelines to follow, helping to maintain a respectful and efficient study environment for all library users. Room1 : Cabin & Pavilion & Patio type Unlike other study spaces, the study room here is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., so be sure to keep this in mind when making a reservation. The cabin consists of five rooms, ranging from one to five people, and is located on the first floor of Millennium Hall. Each room is equipped with large blackboards and TVs. However, a disadvantage is that the Pavilion is open, meaning users can see and hear what is happening in adjacent rooms, which might be distracting. The Pavilion includes three rooms and is often used without reservations, as it has no partitions. It features a long sofa, making it ideal for short breaks, but the low desk height should be considered when reserving. The Patio requires a minimum of three people and has two rooms available. Lastly, Jaso, which also requires a minimum of three people, may feel inconvenient due to uncomfortable chairs, so keep this in mind when choosing a room. Room2 : Located in the Library This space is available from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. The study room, located on the second and third floors of the Academic Information Center, offers the advantage of being spacious enough to accommodate a large number of people and features multiple windows. Although it does not have several individual study rooms, it is available as an independent space, making it suitable for group discussions. However, it is important to note that the minimum number of people required is 5 to 6, so it is more appropriate for larger groups. The study room on the fifth floor consists of seven rooms, each with a capacity of six people. This floor has the most study rooms, making it ideal for team tasks without the concern of being interrupted by others. Additionally, it is connected to the rooftop, providing a convenient space for a quick meal. How to Make a Reservation and Precautions After selecting the study room reservation option in the library app, choose the room type and desired date of use. Enter your student ID number along with the time of use, and the reservation will be completed. The reservation details will appear on the screen in yellow, and you can then proceed to the study room at the scheduled time. Upon arrival at the study room, you must scan the QR code located next to the door within 30 minutes to confirm your presence. Failure to verify your arrival will result in a penalty: you will be prohibited from making further reservations for a week and from using the study rooms. Additionally, please refrain from consuming food in the study room as much as possible, and be sure to leave the space clean for the next user. Choosing the right study room can greatly enhance your productivity and provide an ideal environment for both individual and group study. By considering the features, capacities, and availability of different study rooms, you can select the one that best aligns with your academic goals. A total of 20 works were awarded at this year's awards ceremony, with 4 of them going to student teams. A team of students from the Department of System Semiconductor Engineering, who won the SK Hynix award, presented an innovative work titled "Extended Kalman Filter for Battery SoC Estimation Based on Sampling Techniques." Unlike the existing software-based processing to prevent fires caused by overcharging of electric vehicle batteries, they implemented hardware-based processing. Starting with pop-ups at Lotte Department Store in Dongtan and Time Villas in Suwon, "JJ Dessert" is a brand that successfully hosts pop-ups of Dubai chocolates at department stores in various parts of Korea, including Guri, Incheon, Jamsil, and Yeongdeungpo. This brand was founded by Lee Seung-bae, a professor of Global Business Administration at Sangmyung University, and his students. Let's vividly learn about the successful founding story of the company through an interview with Professor Lee Seung-bae. Photos of JJ Desert’s Dubai Chocolate Start-up Story: How SMU Professor and Students Sold Dubai Chocolate Together Professor Lee Seung-bae is currently the head of the Startup Support Center at Sangmyung University and is conducting a course about start-ups based on his experience of successful start-ups before becoming a university professor. He and the students met through a class called Export-Import Basics. He emphasized trying various things, such as start-ups, in this class, and one student who wished to start a business visited the professor. After talking about starting a business, the three students and the professor gathered and borrowed an acquaintance's office to start a business. They heard Dubai chocolate is becoming a trend, so they tried various recipes by looking up YouTube videos and others. After finding a good recipe, they submitted a proposal to the Lotte Department Store and got an opportunity to conduct a pop-up. The entire process of the start-up, from recipe development to packaging material design, was done directly by themselves. A Difficulty and the Secret to Success in the Process of Starting a Business Since Dubai chocolate is a food product, the biggest difficulty was that it was important to keep it free of foreign substances. Therefore, JJ Dessert carried out the last process on site. It seems that one of the big factors of its success was the on-site demonstration of the process of putting melted chocolate in a mold, hardening it in the refrigerator, and removing it from the water heater. Customers recognized this as a performance, and bloggers posted this process on their blogs, which created a natural promotional effect. At first, their plan was to open a pop-up store once or twice on a small scale. However, the first pop-up store in Dongtan had an open run for two weeks, which was a huge, unexpected success. And this success gave them the opportunity to have another pop-up store. However, JJ Dessert, founded by a Sangmyung University professor and students, did not have a lot of production staff. A Rapid Change in Tastes JJ Dessert not only makes Dubai chocolate but also continues to produce and sell other dessert products, including chestnut tiramisu. Professor Lee Seung-bae describes the F/B (Food and Beverage) industry as “fast-F/B,” just like fast food and fast fashion. As trends change rapidly, F/B companies have to continue to develop new things. JJ Dessert entrepreneurs hear a lot of opinions from the media and department store managers, and they heard that the trend of Dubai chocolate is gone, and the trend of S’more chocolate is newly rising. After hearing it, they directly developed and released S’more chocolate, but the response was not good. Meanwhile, chestnut tiramisu was introduced by a Netflix series “Culinary Class Wars.” They again developed a new recipe and released chestnut tiramisu to keep up with the trend. They produced the sample product in a day and changed the S’more chocolate corner into the chestnut tiramisu in the pop-up store. However, selling multiple items in a single pop-up store can confuse people and reduce sales. Therefore, chestnut-tiramisu is currently being sold at the Lotte Department Store in Incheon through a Christmas-style stand, with a good customer response. The Most Important Thing in a Start-up Professor Lee Seung-bae emphasizes what is more important than a brilliant idea is “executability." Ideas that are only in your head have no meaning, and we can only grow by bumping directly into walls and overcoming them in the course of implementation. Professor Lee Seung-bae’s advice that students should try more when they are young. He wants students to invest a lot of their time in one thing and have the experience of fully focusing on something. This experience will be a good qualification even if you succeed or fail. Kicker: SM NEWS Summer Program on Regional Studies with Towson University by Ji-min Baek, Editor-in-Chief / Si-ho Park, Reporter pjm5875@naver.com / pnshse05@naver.com Among our school’s sister universities in the United States, students from Towson University located in Baltimore, Maryland, participated in a summer program on regional studies at Sangmyung University Seoul Campus from July 21 to August 3. Seven students from Towson University and six from Sangmyung University had time to take various lectures and enjoy Korean culture together in person by visiting various places. Here’s what they learned and experienced. About the Towson University Summer Program Towson University students' summer program on regional studies and philosophy ran for two weeks from July 21 to Aug. 3 at the Seoul campus of Sangmyung University. Students had time to learn about Korea through lectures for a week from July 22 to July 27. In the lecture, the students had time to understand Korean society, economy, history, and culture. After listening to the lectures from professors in their respective fields, they had group discussion time so that they could hear more vivid stories of Korea and share their opinions with Korean students (buddies). After the class, the students visited Community Chest Korea, LG Magok Science Park, Gyeongbokgung Palace, the National Assembly, DMZ, Insadong, etc., and had time to experience and feel Korean society, history, and culture firsthand. A class about Korean history by Dr. Samuel Denny and Dr. Kim Kyung-jin A class about Korean culture: GAT by Dr. Yang Hee-sun Visiting Gyeongbokgung Palace Interviews with Students from Towson University I interviewed Ash and Macayla, students at Towson University. Ash participated in this program because it is related to her major. Additionally, as she enjoys learning about various subjects, she finds it fascinating to get new information and some new pieces of history and culture. Macalya learned about this through her class and developed an interest in it by participating in a study abroad fair, which ultimately led her to join this program. Both are interested in K-pop and Macalya is also interested in the fashion and K-beauty culture in Korea. They each selected the natural landscapes of Korea and their meeting with students from Sangmyung University as the most memorable things about this program. They stated that, in addition to gaining considerable knowledge about Korean culture, history, and economy through their participation in the program, they also appreciated the opportunity to broaden their perspectives. I also interviewed Professor Samuel A. Denny Jr, who conducted the lecture on Understanding Korean History. He expressed his pleasure at being able to share Dr. Kim Kyung-jin’s vivid stories of the Korean War and his remarkable mindset with students from Sangmyung University and Towson University. He also noted that during the Q&A session, Dr. Kim provided a meaningful response to a question with the phrase “Dig many holes when you are young,” which meant the idea that young people should constantly challenge themselves and gain diverse experiences. Everyone was deeply impressed by this answer. I believe, as Dr. Kim mentioned, that continuously learning new things and gaining diverse experiences are important. I have no doubt that this program would have been a valuable experience for both our students and those from Towson University. I hope that there will be more opportunities in the future to engage in such summer programs and other avenues for learning.

Sangmyung University highlights the university’s commitment to advancing higher education and preparing future leaders. Sangmyung University has been consistently acknowledged for its educational capabilities through various government financial support programs and it has also received a good evaluation in this program. Specifically, Sangmyung University received the highest rating of S in the Educational Innovation part for the academic systems reform, including the establishment of the undeclared major’s program and its unconstrained changing of major system. At the end of the first semester, students of Korean universities, including Sangmyung University, are very interested in the benefits of receiving their credits at the same time as they wait for their credits. There is an academic scholarship system and benefits in all universities in Korea.Also there are various types of scholarship systems in our school, Sangmyung University. But many students pass without receiving 100% of the benefits or even knowing that they exist. This can be confirmed in Everytime’s more than 150 Q&As, which is the university student community. In this article, I would like to introduce our school's scholarship system, which is the subject of confusion, and introduce the period and space in which you can apply for the scholarship programs. Campus Scholarships Depending on Grades There are more than 23 types of scholarships in our school alone. Among these various scholarships, I will introduce some of the scholarships that give the most students the opportunity to receive. First of all, the top/secondary scholarship of the department, which is a scholarship that many students know, can be reduced by 70% and the full amount of each tuition fee. The excellent multi-major scholarship is the top 10% of students who have completed multiple majors can receive 50% of the tuition fee is reduced for each semester. In addition, there is an academic (myeonhak) scholarship. This is to select the number of people for each department and individual notices are announced for each department. Academic plans and interviews are mobilized if necessary. There are two types of academic scholarships: Type A is for students who have good academic performance and have been recommended by the head of the faculty, Type B is for students who are under the 8th section of the income category of the Korea Scholarship Foundation. 40% of the tuition fee is reduced for both types. Lastly, Enhancement scholarships also exist. A certain amount of scholarship is provided to students who have an average score of 1.5 or higher than the previous semester's grades. This is a grade-related scholarship, and all students who have taken a lecture can apply. Kicker: SM NEWS Ungraduate students of Smart Information and Communication Engineering’s Winning the Excellent Paper Award at the Korean Entertainment Industry Association Conference By Ye-Dam Hwang, Reporter hwangyedam1108@naver.com The ungraduate students of Smart Information and Communication Engineering of Sangmyung University (Kim Min-Gyu, Kim Ye-Rin, Jeong Hyung-Min, and Lim Chae-Hyun)won the excellent paper award at the Korean Entertainment Industry Association conference. Korea Entertainment Industry, which was established in 2007, leads the entertainment industry field’s continuous development not only with industry and policy of entertainment industry field but also through academic research, technical development, publication of theses, hosting academic conferences for related technology and convergence technology. At the conference of this association, the students won the excellent paper award with the topic of “real-time communicative parking lot reservation system.” This system was created to reduce inundation damage of underground parking lots which is common in the rainy season and to use parking space more efficiently. Contents of the Paper The Korean Entertainment Industry Association conference was held with the theme “Reflective Study on the Entertainment Industry of Modern Society.” The paper that won the excellent paper award introduces installation of water level detection and water stop at the entrance of parking lots to prevent inundation damage in the rainy season, and tells about the development of an application that allows drivers to book parking space and communicate to use the parking spots effectively. Meaning of this Award More than 80 people participated, and 22 papers were published in this conference of the Korean Entertainment Industry. The fact that the four ungraduate students of our university won the excellent paper award at this academic conference where many people participated is a very proud and noticeable achievement.
